How to buy incredibly damaged cards? (read: ripped in half)

Hi all,

Bit of a strange question, which arises from my pressing need to obtain a ripped in half (or even a corner of a) vintage zardy boi (for a presentation, I can explain if anyone is interested) and I have absolutely no idea where to find one, short of purchasing a damaged but intact card and doing it myself. However the very thought of doing so fills me with this uncontrollable need to cry so…it’s not gonna happen.

Short of committing card murder, have any of you ever tried to / successfully purchased a completely obliterated specimen, and if so how?

Many thanks!

(Mod folk: I sincerely hope this does not constitute a WTB thread, but if it does do feel free to remove it)

I´m sure we have someone on here who is ready to commit the crime for you, we´ve got a few bounty hunters on board!

In all seriousness, your approach is the most reasonable, just get a damaged card/hp card and rip it, finding a card that is already ripped and not missing the other piece is pretty rare, maybe the seller will even help you out with this special request haha

Haha, card-destruction middle man services; a new business idea?

In all honesty it might be the simplest way, you are right - though i do balk at the thought of paying 30 odd quid for the privilege.

Also could you imagine leaving that sort of request haha, “take your terrible card and rip it in half for me mate”, I’d be on Ebay Trash in no time :'). There’s also the morally grey area of having ordered the execution. Not sure how that looks to a jury.

Thank you for replying, I appreciate it. I will have to meditate and decide where my morals lie. For what it’s worth I wouldn’t need both parts, all I need is something that if you squint really hard looks like it was once some shiny cardboard.

Not quite. I want an already ripped charizard, I absolutely do not want to be responsible for it’s destruction!

I’m sure they exist, as I would imagine that’s how a lot of my childhood cards ended up too. But since they are so damaged as to be ‘unsellable’ they are suprisingly hard to find.

As to why: I am doing an evening start-up business course at the moment and my example business idea to present is going to be a pop-up 90s gaming collectable store - the kinds that you might find at gaming festivals etc. I want to have props whilst I’m presenting and part of my introduction talks about how most people who grew up in that era probably first discovered a love of collecting through pokemon / pogs etc. I want a super ripped card to demonstrate how most of these collections ended up.

I hope the explanation makes sense!

Honestly PapaFrank, I have taken a look at ebay this evening but the closest I have found is a folded intact card! I imagine if I’m patient a completely ripped one will show up eventually - but I never anticipated it would be so difficult!

I see, that sounds like a cool endeavor. I have had friends who used to carry their cards around in their pockets and the mangled version of the card you’re seeking is definitely a common thing. The other less fortunate scenario is that their parents threw their cards in the trash.

Out of curiosity, what’s your budget for said card?

(thick ambiguously Eastern European accent) I rip card for you. No question asked. You never see me again. American cash money. No cryptomoney. Everybody happy, yes? Ho ho ho!
