I haven’t seen a thread discussing this and I think it’s interesting to hear about peoples collecting philosophies. I’m in the camp of having fewer but more meaningful cards.
Right now I own 65 PSA slabs but would only consider about 30 of them my “main” collection, ie cards I’m going to keep for a long time/that belong to a specific collection (OOYAMA cards for example). The rest I either have a weaker bond to or am looking to sell.
That is interesting, do you find the satisfaction in knowing you have complete sets? Because for me it becomes harder and harder to appreciate the cards I own as I aquire more slabs. In a binder they are very accessible, not so much slabbed up.
I had probably 300 or so but recently sold a good bit to get more into sealed stuff. Though to be honest I’ve been buying more slabs again because singles are so down right now compared to sealed
126, which is 126 more than what I actually want because I am a binder collector lol. Sometimes graded is comparable price wise and sometimes even cheaper (especially with newer stuff) hence picking up the slabs along the way.
If anyone wants to trade for raw though - reach out lol.
Probably 100 - 200 slabs from WoTC, ex and 90s - 2000s JP promos. For modern I dont mind raw in a binder since that stuff is super abundant and loses its novelty if encased in plastic. On the other hand, I prefer slabbed for the old stuff as a way of historic preservation.
Same here. I’m sure someday I’ll get a card that I feel looks better being displayed in a slab. But I generally love the clean look of everything being in a binder.
Most of my collection is in binders. I have 8 slabbed cards. 6 are my autos from events last season, and the other 2 are some of my top pokemon (Marill and Leafeon) in PSA 10s. At first I just had 1 slab and a matching sitting cutie, so my goal was to match my plushies to my slabs in an attempt to limit my spending/collecting, since I don’t have a lot of space for displaying slabs/plushies.
I plan to get 3 more slabs because I have now accumulated a few more sitting cuties that don’t have matching slabs yet
Arbitrarily I have decided my autos don’t count for the matching sitting cuties, and I don’t think I will count my World’s Sprigatito plush either.
I don’t feel the need to appreciate every card I own equally (or at all). As you say, a lot of it is set-motivated. Even with 1000+ slabs, there will still be some you appreciate A LOT more than the others and that’s how I prefer it
Plus I’m addicted to the sound of clacking slabs so that’s probably a lot of it
I don’t like slabs but I have close to 200.
I never look at them though and I only really care about maybe 10-15 cards. Some were gifts or are just too expensive to crack.
I try to buy lightly played cards for my binders so I never get tempted to grade them.
