I set up my twitter to send me notifications from places like PokeGuardian and PokeBeach which usual report on when new promos and sets are announced/dropped. I also frequent the e4 discord which always has news posted there.
I learned the hard way with Special Delivery Pikachu, a card I assumed would be distributed in such volume that acquisition would not be an issue. This is something a fool does, like myself. Tragic.
They are cheap af again. Now that so many copies have been graded and entered Ebay. Seems ppl just wanted to flip them and no one actually wanted to own them
Sometimes it honestly just comes down to luck and timing. I look up some of the sites on @trainerjack mentioned and then if I expect a release, I do daily searches on where it’s set to release from. If it’s accessible (as in, I don’t need a middle man), I just set an alarm bright and early. Other times I’ll just hear it via word of mouth and manage to grab a posted link and somehow get it.
Some people have modded software to search out these things automatically and buy automatically.
Reminds me of Illustrator Zard. That card was pushed so hard that I don’t think prices even budged past $25 a piece when people saw how many there were.
I am also having trouble figuring out how to stay up to date. I just watched smprattes latest video about how on his patreon he told people that buying the illustrator charizard was a good idea and he tripled their money… Does he give tips on what cards to buy often on patreon? If so, that will be the first patreon I sub to.
If you are following anyone, not just me for “which cards to buy” you aren’t going to do well in this hobby. My patreon is about understanding markets, not chasing certain cards. Sometimes cards can be used as an example to emphasize value, like in the case of charizard. But the focus is knowledge and understanding, to help you make sound decisions, rather than which card is the next stonk.
In addition to that, @conwaytwitty , you should take whatever anyone says about markets always as opinions first. I like Pokenomics Jake’s quote where if someone gives out great opinions & knowledge about patterns, you should actually need their advice less over the years, become independent and probably challenge their opinions more. I find myself disagreeing with Scott sometimes which didn’t happen early on when I was just absorbing opinions as knowledge all the time. With the Illustrator Charizard in Scotts underrated, if you were into that side of the market for a longer time, your reaction probably just would’ve been “…yeah, duh”. It was an example for larger patterns.
