Buyers Remorse

Hello all, new to the hobby

I bought in, at more than I can can afford.

The hype and nostalgia prompted me to place the anti and now I have a bunch of cool cards… But just that, cool cards. 1000 dollars later. Doesn’t seem worth it

Now I’m thinking I wasted a lot of money, I have no intention to sell or invest anymore like I thought I would. I just got excited and bought a lot of stuff. The display I built lost a lot of the excitement it first brought me. It only feels like a waste of money.

Anybody else with the same feelings? Can I feel good about having vintage Pokemon cards etc. or do you have to have a business plan/model to make collecting these cards a good decision?

Why aren’t they cool anymore? What about the artwork or historic value changed in regards to the cards you purchased? Maybe you chose the wrong hobby, but to make a purchase of $1000, you must’ve surely had some sort of adoration for what you bought. What made you lose the excitement?

Ye. Don’t spend money if you can’t afford it.

It starts with interest. If you don’t have the interest or lost it along the way and you found yourself in a financially unpleasant situation, I just recommend selling now and finding something else you’re interested in.

I get that feeling sometimes, like “this is just cardboard why am I spending so much time and money on it.” But that feeling is rare and the joy I get from the hobby is overwhelming in comparison. In your case, if you feel like you’ve exhausted your interest, it’s okay to feel like that at any point and be grateful you aren’t any deeper in.

As a Pokémon collector forum, you’ll be harder pressed to find people here who feel like they’re wasting money on the hobby, but there’s nothing wrong with dabbling in something new and realizing it isn’t what you want.

Going to happen to a lot of people I think, if you won’t feel satisfied if the value goes away and you don’t feel financially comfortable holding them for a long time you should probably just sell, take the loss, and move on with a lesson learned

Yes that’s just it, I love it just an overly expensive memory to revisit. I guess I wanted people with time invested to make me feel better about what I’m getting into. All of the cards I cherished 15 20 years ago cost more than my mortgage. What a trip

You’re probably just not a collector by nature. I enjoy the process of collecting and owning physical cards, but not everyone does. If you don’t enjoy having the cards, sell them – especially if you need the money (which it sounds like you do). There’s nothing wrong with this at all. We all make mistakes and it’s great that you’ve been honest with yourself about it .

Good question. I want more and more to feel fulfilled. But everything I want is outrageously priced. I don’t know if I have the means to participate in the hobby. I’m not broke. But I’m not in a position to buy a psa 10 rattata either it appears.

Is everyone in the hobby have thousands of disposable income. I want to collect Pokemon but I can’t rationalize the price tag

You can participate in the hobby, you just don’t have to get the highest graded copy of the card you want.
Try completing binders of the sets you grew up with, that shall bring you more joy than minty encapsulated cards.

Maybe if you can’t afford the things you want maybe look for cheaper options. Collecting PSA 10 isn’t feasible for some people any more. Even though prices have gone up on a lot of things, binder copies are still for the most part affordable. Also unlimited are a great option, you get the same great art for a fraction of the cost. Ill never own a lot of the big marquee things in this hobby but i dont really care because theres still so much to collect that i enjoy in my price range

You could be right here. I’m probably just starting with expectations too big

You can always sell and get back you costs less some fees and maybe a little depending on what you bought. But it does confuse me the line of ‘I bought in, at more than I can can afford’. I envision a lot have done this with the hype but I don’t get how, I have a safety net I do not go below and have done all my life. I guess the go to rule is along the lines of spend 10% of what you have to spare.

Maybe your purchases were about being part of the hype rather than actual personal interest. You also say you dont want to invest anymore, Pokemon is not made for investment like every newcomer or instagramer thinks at the moment. You can invest in anything if you have enough knowledge and things goes in the right direction over time but pokemon is not first off for investing. Same with the remark of having a business plan to make collecting worthwhile. Collecting is collecting, business is business, which one did you come in for?

You probably just have to change your collecting goals, then. There are plenty of cards you can collect for much less.

I’m a student so I absolutely don’t have tons of income. But I’m lucky in that I’ve been a collector my whole life and was really involved in collecting MTG for ~13 years. And I honestly just got super lucky. With the way prices went, I ended up with a pretty valuable collection. Back in January/February/March, I liquidated almost all of that and went hard into collecting Pokemon. And Pokemon cards then started to skyrocket in value. And the rest is history. And I have a feeling that many people have experienced similar to me. Remember that anyone who collected before the spikes now has a collection worth 10x (or 5x or 20x, etc.) more than they originally spent.

You’re coming into the hobby at a time where prices are higher than they’ve ever been. So you’ll probably just need to adapt your collecting goals accordingly. You could try collecting lower condition cards or non-1st Edition, etc.

I know when you jump into something theres just so much and you buy whatever you can get your hands on. Maybe you should take a step back and reevaluate your collection. Theres nothing wrong with refining !

Buyers remorse is for bitches. It’s just money. You’ll make more. If you don’t like what you have, sell it off. In the future, only use disposable income. It’s like prepping for a night out at the casino. Buy your liquor and crab legs and drugs and pull money out of the ATM for chips fully expecting yourself to lose all that money but have a great time out. If you come out ahead, it’s a nice little bonus. Good luck my dude. If you’re selling stuff PM me what you got for sale.

Sounds like someone was trying to flip but got caught holding the bag when prices fell

Nice of you and @pokehut1 to live up to the “not nice to new members” thread.

I’ve had this feeling a few times when I bought too much too quickly. It’s hard not to when buying is such a rush. But with everything in life (gambling is a good example) you have to pace yourself and budget to your income.

After a while, the feeling will disappear and the excitement and appreciation for the cards will grow again. It gets even better when you look back months down the line and to see your “wasted money” is now worth more than you paid .

If the feeling doesn’t go after a while and you don’t feel like adjusting your goals, then maybe it’s not for you. It has to be a hobby/passion first and foremost!
