I don’t remember these being very popular before. Why are people suddenly making a big deal about it now when the cards have had them for 15+ years?
Also isn’t Holo Bleed on most cards just the normal design? The other day someone asked about a ink dot on the corner and talking about error. To me, it seems like trying to grasp and any small differences to make your card more special the other 500000+ copies.
Pretty much, as there are different gimmicks sellers will try to entice buyers to buy their specific card over others. I actually partook in this once myself as a card had a perfect swirl which enhanced the appeal/quality of the card in my opinion. There are some variations like these in cards, but it is ultimately the buyer that dictates whether or not a card is worth more due to a holo bleed or swirl. If collectors are willing to pay higher prices for such items, then the trend will continue and the niche will grow.
It’s simply pointing out a feature the seller deems worth mentioning in hopes to increase the chances of a sale. 9 out of 10 people won’t care about a swirl, but if even 1 out of 10 does, that chance is good enough. And it’s not like the seller loses anything by mentioning the swirl
I like the aesthetic appeal both have. I like special placements of swirls on cards and will buy a card I otherwise wouldn’t if it has one, I won’t pay a premium though. Same for holo bleeds, they just look good, but I won’t pay much more for one.
When people make fun of holo bleed collectors it’s fun because why do they pay a premium for holo cards in the first place then, when the same artwork exists without it. They buy because it’s an official release that sparkles.
I agree though that some sellers point out ink blobs and what not in cards they own to try and make money from that, because they are desperate for rarity while overlooking all the actual more rare stuff.
Because Instagram and the internet as a whole wasn’t popular back then. I find people are trying to add an extra layer of rarity to many cards by looking for minor differences. Same goes with thick and thin stamps.
If I am not mistaken this trend was popularized on Instagram and Instagram is all about low key flexing that what you have is better than what someone else has.
I don’t really mind the trend, it’s not toxic like PSA 4xxx certs or anything like that, holo swirls genuinely look cool so why not. People pay premiums for minor 1st ed stamps and minor misprints and other variations. Why not swirls?
I agree with your previous post, also I’m not sure on all the sets but I do have a Dark Dragonite from WOTC era Rocket set 1st edition PSA 10 with a nice holo swirl on it that I absolutely love. As I recall the swirls are pretty common on the galaxy holofoil.
