i think basing a tcg on a franchise that itself isn’t evolving is probably not a wise business move. i mean MTG can keep creating storylines. pokemon is also continuing to build new generations. harry potter’s material isn’t growing a lot very quickly, so basing it on such a source material would worry me.
I agree partially with what you’re saying, but regardless many are in the wrong hobby if they wish to profit - and that usually ends rather badly ~ Are the HP WOTC boxes increasing? Yes? Is the marketing/canon within the Wizarding World increasing? It sure is, whether that means you wish to buy them or not is immaterial. If every transaction was so linear and orthodox then everyone would be rich
It’s not far-fetched, as one is simply considering variables which may appear innocuous. If you’re swayed by “hyped” comments on this forum then your judgement is somewhat in question ~
I had a 2 player starter deck which was fun to play. It’s such a basic game though and IIRC, you only win by milling your opponent so not as strategic as MTG or Pokemon. No one else I knew collected any of these cards. Not the smartest investment if anyone is thinking so.
So I just want to thank this thread for introducing me to Harry Potter TCG!!!
In lockdown, I got a bit annoyed at Pokemon prices so decided to switch to buying some other collectibles, mainly HP TCG.
So here’s my flex, I managed to get every booster box (have 2 base set ones as I noticed a slight rip in the seal on one), decks, art set, all completed sets (with a spare full complete Base Set and non-holo Qudditch set) and I think I’m only missing a few promos (only collecting English). I’ve also got a few blisters, but finding it hard to figure out what else there is and what I’m missing (if you have any I’m missing, I’ll pay good money for them. After taking the photo I realised I’m missing the pack art of the Cauldron from the Diagon Alley set - if you have that pack, again I’ll pay over eBay prices for it!!).
I have bought around 70 Harry Potter booster boxes this year. I think stocks might run out soon, especially with the new game coming out. Of course quidditch cup is huge in supply, the price is still cheap though. Nothing to stop a bunch of people buying 100 of them from the wholesaler for a few thousand dollars. Could wipe out the supply of even the most numerous box. Other boxes such as Adventures at Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and the Base set are reasonably rare.
Pokemon boxes are now reaching the 10’s of thousands, it seems obvious for those people priced out to buy a Harry Potter box for 30 dollars.
There are some other card games too that are really overlooked from the 1990’s. I am ready to reveal one of them (Illuminati) as the boxes are pretty much sold out and I am happy with what I have. But there is also one other card game from the 1990’s that is a complete gem, rare and overlooked that I am still accumulating.

I put forward the notion that the vintage card game craze will increasingly spread out from Pokemon as the prices go crazy and people look for other opportunities/areas of interest. Kind of like with Bitcoin at the beginning of a crypto bull run. First, Bitcoin rises in price. Second, People start buying Alt-coins in search of similar gains that they missed with Bitcoin.
Pokemon is Bitcoin.
Alternative card games such as Illuminati and Harry potter are Alt-coins.
To put it one way, it is a lot easier for a Harry Potter Quidditch Cup booster box to go from $30 to $300 than it is for a Base Unlimited box to go from $20k to $200k.
They also have (6) cases of 24 blisters for $150 ea. They’ve had these for over a year. They used to be $89. I tried to buy all 6 with combined shipping and they wouldn’t budge, so I bailed. Then they raised the price by double lol
First of all good luck on the spec. I just cant see it happening. First of all the primary motivator for a rise of CCGs is nostalgia and games which failed just never got the exposure that successful TCGs got. Everybody is aware of MTG, YGO and Pokemon but who really fondly remembers buying Harry potter boosters?
People who are priced out of Pokemon WOTC boxes are unlikely to go to Harry Potter. It just not the same appeal. They are much more likely to go to modern Pokemon with familiar characters etc.
I think a Crypto comparison is flawed, Crypto is purely a alternative asset not a collectable, it has no aesthetic appeal and the majority of people are in it for the monetary gain. CCG prices are backed by both scarcity and desirability so there needs to be a core collector base which not present for dead CCGs. 1st Edition Charizard is certainly not rare compared to many other cheaper cards. Harry Potter CCG does have a successful media franchise backing it but considering that the card game failed does not make it very enticing. The same could be said for the many Star Wars failed CCGs. I have never heard of Illumanti (maybe just a US thing) but that has even less of a chance.
