Yeah he requires a ‘‘small fee’’ xD
Hi, does anyone still think this would be a good investment. I’m a massive HP fan and tcg collector. Normally do Pokemon but I’ve just stumbled across this.
No
If you’re a fan and love HP why not, it’s surely worth picking up.
Does it matter if it’s a good investment?
Amen
It’s just very very expensive. They are going to be more like display items. If one day If I needed to sell them (hope I don’t) I don’t want to have lost out on thousands because they have plummeted in price
They were never a good investment so it’s doubtful they will be in the future. I was able to get a sealed quidditch cup box for $39, 18 years after release. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to sell it for over $200 when things got frothy. No crystal ball but a base booster for $300 might be the ceiling. I don’t think they will go to $0 though, of course, if that is the concern
Harry Potter is an incredible IP. Their WoTC-produced card game is not where the money is nor will it be in the future.
Maybe ~
Harry Potter is still an incredibly popular IP and we’ll have to see how the Harry Potter show does, and whether it’ll influence the prices ~ There’s also the possibility of Wizards of the Coast doing a MTG set (as they did with Lord of the Rings etc), or who knows they might continue after Chamber of Secrets if they regain the rights ~
I’m not bothered about making money from the set. I just love tcg and Harry Potter so would love to have them for display.
Saying that I also don’t want to lose loads of money on them, current prices on eBay are -
Base set £500
Adventures at Hogwarts £500
Diagon Alley £300
Quidditch Cup £200
chamber of secrets £1000
It’s not a small amount of money
TBH this is quite incorrect.
During the Boom, base set boxes went for over $1k. They are now $250-300.
Not as valuable as Pokémon, as most Harry Potter people don’t care for the cards, but it still has money in it and appreciation potential from the highs.
Of course the boxes/cards leaped during the boom, most collectibles with strong IPs did.
My point is that the majority of the Harry Potter IP collector money is with non-TCG items that regularly sell for tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
From a market perspective, the TCG doesn’t compare to these. They are apples and oranges.
- First Edition Printings
- Autographed Books
- Movie-used Memorabilia (e.g., wands, glasses, crossbow, etc.)
- Autographed Movie Posters
If I had thousands of dollars to put into the Harry Potter IP with hopes of it appreciating greatly, I would not choose the defunct WoTC TCG.
That said, if you like the Harry Potter TCG, you should absolutely collect it. It’s a neat relic of the past. But the real money in the Harry Potter IP is not in the TCG.
If it goes back to all time highs, that is a 300% gain (which would take, what, over a decade or two in the stock market on average?).
Boxes are also being opened, so supply is going down every day.
I look at % gains to invest in, not current price per the thing.
There is a lot to buy in the IP, nothing is more or less “better” than the other thing at this stage (yes if you held both for 20 years, you were better off going with the 1st ed printing lol).
Buy Harry Potter tcg because you like Harry Potter tcg. If you want to invest then buy pokemon. Its proven to be the safer and more fruitful “investment” for 30 years. This is of course ignoring traditional investments (boring lol). The biggest stonk in Harry Potter is nothing compared to Pokemon’s endless growth across all its products and sets year after year.
That’s a huge IF. Like I mentioned earlier, I was able to buy a quidditch box in 2019, 18 years after release, for $39, which was under MSRP. The IP was never more popular than it was back then (they were still making good movies between those years). The only people buying are speculating or looking for awesome looking display pieces (like OP). Extremely hard to see multibagger returns (or any returns) on something like this.
COS and others went wild during the boom. Truly I think it’s a dead TCG that won’t bounce back, but it is so fun to rip cheap (relative to Pokemon) WOTC packs and experience that smell and the feel of the cards. That’s just my opinion. Those mirror holos were something else. The art…. Was bizarre.
The Harry Potter Artbox stuff is what you want to be buying for investment purposes IMO. The boxes are limited and can contain Signatures, prop/costume cards.
Very undervalued and under appriciated at the moment.
Good point. They do sell for fairly decent prices still.
The thing that always kills me about cards like these with sooo much potential is the blunder that is design style. You have classic wotc, you have the excellent IP… and then they give it to a decision maker who just ruins the consistency of the set. Sideways cards, inconsistent card layout, and weird base set holo character style choices. I mean, I like the style sort of, but imagine them being vertical.
Because I’ve always loved the quasi MTG art style, it honestly is amazing.
I bought a set of the non holos from base set, for substantially less than the price of just a simple wotc holo. Crazy. Quite enjoyable, but would have been immeasurably better with all vertically aligned half arts.
(edited post for grammar mistakes, looked like a was a drunken buffoon, promise i wasn’t tonight)
I agree that the art box is the only way to go for investment purposes but don’t agree that they are undervalued right now. Some of those multi autos go for huge bucks
