Harry Potter TCG Discussion Thread

just curious, are you all seeing people opening these hp boxes? i really like the boxes, but i’m not a big fan of most of the cards, unlike pokemon or mtg. and the single card market on ebay seems very small for hp as well.

I dont think many who buy now will open - if any at all - given that a market for singles graded doesn’t seem to exist yet with a total POP across all 5 sets setting at ~100 cards.
Im personally spending some of what I make on sealed on singles to either play with or foils to grade, especially foils from DA and AAH, there are quite lot I really enjoy. I’m a sucker for Ron Spencer artwork and there are some nice ones

Agreed, I’ve purchased a few loose, raw cards, as a few artwork caught my eyes, but yeah, i also get a sense that most people aren’t opening these boxes/packs to enjoy the cards inside (yet).

I still have a strange feeling that there’ll be a continuation of the Harry Potter TCG - especially with all this Harry Potter news, and obviously the template of Pokemon ~

I love Harry Potter but I hate the TCG, the cards just look off to me. I know they are base on the books but they feel off. Im glad to see another TCG do it well now!

Them’s fighting words, lol. I’m kidding of course, but with hundreds of illustrations by various artists, some will hit and others aren’t for everyone. Art being subjective and all that.

On the whole, I love the arts, but there are some that don’t appeal to me, too (like the version of Harry on the CoS box). Others I’d buy blown up prints of and frame them.

Would be awesome!

I dont think any of this new of new series is going to affect the price much.

These cards came out in 2001.

If 10+ record breaking big blockbuster movies being released after that isn’t going to affect the price, I’m not sure a TV series is.

True, but we’re living in different times now, and the fact these boxes have risen quite considerably in the past few years - totally, in my opinion, based on Pokemon - is something that shouldn’t be understated, nor is the potential for other variables to influence appreciation for that matter ~ The fact these boxes have risen to such an extent even after Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find them is interesting ~

I don’t think the chances of a new Harry Potter TCG being made is reliant or really at all related to the success of this TV show that is being made. It’s just one of those things that seems to happen or not, Digimon hadn’t really had a noticeably upsurge in popularity when the new Digimon TCG got announced. Transformers also had long since dropped off from it’s peak popularity when they did the Transformers TCG.

We’ll see, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Especially after that Logan Paul video I expect the Harry Potter TCG to see the effects ~

Wishful thinking

Not exactly when you consider how many people are still outpriced in WOTC, as well as how a great many people are hoarding modern Nintendo product - a certain inability to get boxes instore too ~ It’s not wishful thinking by any stretch as much as it is hedging one’s bets

I mean without any major Harry Potter news or “Pokemon GO” equivalence: the base box went from $150 in 2018 to $730-960 currently ~ So logically one should consider unorthodox variables ~

Update on Base Boxes:
January 3, 2020:
£400 ($550)
January 15:
£551 ($756)
January 15:
£600
February 2:
£532 ($730)
Post-Logan Paul video:
February 6, 2020:
£665 ($913) - it was a damaged box, mind you (link embedded)

I mean, that’s clutching at straws to put it lightly lol.

The prices will still go up (sealed WOTC, nostalgic hobby, speculation purchasing rife) but to say they’ll be attributed to Logan Paul is like expecting Pokémon to rise because someone did a My Little Pony video lol.

On another note, blisters are getting ridiculous. It’s almost impossible to get hold of them outside of the USA :slightly_frowning_face:.

Well true to an extent

But you’re right, though there are some connections to an extent - as you’ve said with speculative procedure ~

Blisters are? I didn’t realise that, also: hope you get that package ~

I think it’s following a general demand curve from last year’s growing awareness of the TCG. Awareness built due to a combination of Pokémon collectors looking for more affordable TCGs to collect (especially WOTC TCGs), entertainment cards becoming a bigger category in collectibles, and many entering their earning years, with great nostalgia for Harry Potter.

But to clarify: a Base box with a relatively damaged corner sold for $913:

Man I sold two booster boxes in November for £300. To be fair the boxes were slightly damaged but seals intact. Still got one more but the box has damaged corners and a cut on the front (pictures on page 20 of this thread). I was planning on opening it with the GF (huge HP fan and she’s stuck in Germany) but money is getting real short because of lack of work. Might need to sell it but don’t know the value to put on it.

A rather interesting article, on points we’ve already brought up, @collectorperson : www.blowoutcards.com/blog/rumors-of-harry-potter-series-potentially-coming-to-hbo-max-could-heat-up-already-red-hot-potter-gaming-trading-cards/
