I’ve got around 30 fairly mint old back Japanese cards that I’m thinking about getting graded. The fronts are extremely clean and the centering is good, but just about every back I’ve looked at has the following marks:
Is this normal for the old backs? I’ve scanned the fronts thoroughly but don’t see anything similar to what’s on the back. I’ve looked at 8 of the 30 cards so far and they all have marks like this. Good centering, great front, and whatever this is on the back. I’m not experienced enough with these cards to know if this is standard out of the pack, or if this is damage that happened afterwards. Let me know what you guys think, was hoping to get some 10s out of this lot but the backs have me worried.
It is normal, I’ve had that with my old back cards. I just don’t know how will it affect grades in general - I’ve graded one card that has that and it’s a 9, but I think the biggest factor for it to get a 9 was the front centering which is quite bad. So it’s hard to say. That damage in your card looks minimal and imo shouldn’t affect too much. You could try sending a couple ones in to see how they do
I’m kinda nervous about testing the waters with these. I bought them in a big lot and planned to grade and sell the 10s. Unfortunately, after looking at 9 prices, I would have a hard time breaking even on most of them. I’d still come out ahead if I sell them raw, so I’m leaning towards that unless somebody can chime in that has a bunch of 10s with similar wear.
