Hey guys, very new to grading cards with PSA. I want to try and get a couple of my Japanese holos graded, but I’m unsure if these scratches on the back will ruin the grade. The scratches on the back are kind of light, but definitely noticeable. I noticed that unless the card gets a PSA 9/10, its usually worth less than the raw card’s value. What do you guys think?

@grinz, If you want to grade it, you can. Maybe get it Authenticated if you’re sentimental over this particular card and want to keep it for a personal reason. If you want to grade it to potentially increase it’s value and sell it later, don’t bother. It’s too far gone for that.
If you’re looking to grade the card for a profit, i would stray away. But if there is an attachment to the card, and you would like to grade it for your collection, then do it! Great card regardless.
@grinz im not an expert in gauging grades myself, but in being someone who purchases many PSA 9 graded cards I could say that you more than likely wouldnt hit that range due to the heavy scratching marks on the back sadly. To back @pokemonpuppy here as well, I wouldnt recommend grading it for sheer value in selling in the future, however if youd like to have it in a psa case, taking whatever grade it gets or even authenticating would be then up to you if desired.
Thank you guys for the quick response. I probably won’t grade them then since they look better in my binder set!
@grinz, Nothing wrong with a good binder piece. You could buy a PSA 8/9 for around $30-50 BIN on eBay just now. Even if your card was mint I’d still recommend just buying one, they relatively cheap and at least you wouldn’t have PSA waiting times.
@pokemonpuppy, A local card shop owner who sends off sports cards to PSA offered to let me send cards in with their orders for $10 a card, free shipping as I would pick them up from his store. This sparked me to look through my cards to try and get a monetary increase in my cards. I have a binder full of Japanese holos as I am trying to complete the binder set for all WOTC era sets. If i started to collect psa versions of all the cards It would take a lot of time, with the current amount of money i spend per month on cards. I was planning on grading, hopefully selling for more, to fuel my collection by buying loose mint cards to complete out my sets. Still looking for other potential 10/9s in my collection, as I feel I have been given a really good chance by the card shop owner.
Sometimes you can find 9s for 20 bucks so I’d just buy one and put this one back in your binder.
@garyis2000, Thanks for the advice Gary, I’ll keep my eye out on ebay
