Grading error or am I being paranoid?

Hi I’ve literally just received a shining coro coro Mew PSA 9 in the post. And I was inspecting the card and saw some very noticeable damage on the bottom left hand corner as shown below. I have no idea what could have caused the damage I’m guessing its an incorrect factory cut but it is very very noticeable so I’m wondering how the card got a PSA 9 and whether I should return it. Any and all advice is appreciated thanks!

Looks like an 8 to me but i’ve seen cards like this pass for a 9 quite a few times.

I don’t think that’s a problem for a PSA 9 card…

As long as that is the only damage a 9 is imo ok.

Okay thank you for the advice I’m still in two minds about returning it at the moment as I planned to keep this card for a long time and wanted a more aesthetically pleasing 9. And yes that is the only damage apart from very minor silvering here and there.

well, no problem there at a 9. However if it was a 10 then I’ll give PSA a call.

9s aren’t 10s. All 9s have flaws that keep them from getting 19s.
Don’t return it. The seller did nothing wrong. That’s bad for the hobby.
Simply relist it and show pics.

Yeah I’m also fine with this card as a PSA 9. If you’re not satisfied with this card I think you should look at purchasing a 10 as other 9s will probably have similar issues.

Is 19s a new grade? :open_mouth:

This looks an awful familiar to something I posted…

Its not a grading error. You’re more or less lucky to have that as a 9.
And as @garyis2000 says, don’t return it.
Its like ordering for scrambled eggs, and returning the eggs it because it isn’t too scrambled.

To further this…

9’s aren’t 10’s. Even 10’s ARE NOT PERFECT. To return a PSA graded card for “damage”/INAD is nonsensical as the grade takes into account any damage.*

It sounds like you bought this PSA 9 card, not graded it yourself. If the seller accepts returns… okay maybe you can return it for not liking it since a seller accepting returns opens them up to all kinds of nonsensical returns based on the whim of the buyer. Still a crappy thing to do IMO. But if the seller does not accept returns YOU CANNOT RETURN THIS. The only way to even open a case would be by lying and saying the item was “not as described”. By definition it is a PSA 9 card as it was deemed so by the experts over at PSA. You are not an expert. You are not PSA. You bought a PSA 9, you received a PSA 9 which was exactly how it was described.

*Grades sometimes are genuinely wrong and there is damage that was not taken into account. Very rare occurence, but I have experienced it firsthand and even then you should deal with PSA directly to get the card properly regraded, not just return it to the seller and keep an improperly graded card in the wild.

Could be a 10 if that’s the only damage TBH. I’ve had worse 10s

The card looks totally fine for a 9…Don’t return it. If one of my customers would start a return over a minor flaw like that, after receiving the item back I would just block them & never sell anything to them again, buyers like those are just total waste of time.

If you want “aesthetically pleasing” cards, you should probably go for PSA 10s instead. Psa 9 is not supposed to be perfect.

Neither is PSA 10. If you want perfect go for black label BGS 10 and even then I am sure someone with enough time on their hands and the right tools could find near microscopic issues.

I agree 100%

Okay I understand the grading system a little better now I’m just surprised to see a 9 with such obvious damage. Also I had a problem in the past with a seller who sold me a PSA card which had been damaged whilst in the slab. So I am paranoid about it happening to me again. And as the seller did not put up pictures of the back of the card she has already agreed to accept the return if I decide I don’t want it. I might not be PSA or an expert but the fact of the matter is there are numerous cases of cards getting soft 9s or 10s which affects the values and deters collectors from buying that particular card.

Lol… maybe down the road;)

Let’s all keep in mind troll blew up that picture 10 times size which is a joke when estimating a grade.

Tbf the damage is still quite clear without zooming in.

Well it is a 9
