Gold star… overrated or underrated?

@wooltchi i think flexing them on the internet would increase ur risk of being busted, relative to just holding, but i guess he just wanted to cash out and be done with it.

Either way, if we are discussing investibility, thats a completely different discussion for GS dogs. Yes, they arent particularly rare or scarce in the context of the other GS cards, but i disagree that makes them inherently less collectible. If anything, it makes them more collectible, at least for me, because a) theye much more accessible given their lower price and b) theyre some of the nicer looking GS cards imo. Theyre still a drop in the bucket compared to many other cards. It ends up being a subjective discussion about what makes something collectible?

i personally find that set cards become less collectible, the more expensive they get because the opportunity cost grows (with rare exceptions). If i can buy a mint 1st base holo, or exclusive JP promo for =< the price of a mint gold star, im gonna be skipping the gold star every day. Same with alt art lugia, or even some shining cards, or whatever. Again, this is subjective, but thats why i think making a blanket statement doesnt rly capture the nuances of collectibility.

Seeing a lot of talk with no real intellectual discussion. I think a lot of you are confused and have yet to actually look at the card artwork;

Growing up in the EX era, I found Gold Stars to be not as exciting as the regular exs. Lacking the silver foil border was a miss for me with Gold Stars - even if they were significantly rarer and more sought after. I still enjoy them to this day and think that, as a whole, the hype is warranted and not above/below what they demand, but I personally felt a greater bit of excitement with exs.

Espeon Gold Star top-tier tho - especially in Japanese

@needszeebs exactly, I agree. Are unseen forces gold stars as ‘collectible’ as all the other gold stars? No, but compared to the rest of the tcg, they still have some good fundamentals and collectability. It’d be like arguing anything other than trophy or lottery cards aren’t worth collecting or have any ‘collectability.’

Not as popular of a view but I agree.

I am disgusted by the lack of Gold Star Greninja on this list.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the 9/10 POPs for the Gold Star dogs increase steadily year after year? I’m pretty sure the [banned user] who bought them is still trickling a few copies at a time into their PSA submissions.

Gold Stars are pretty much perfectly rated. They have so much going for them (art style consistency, rarity (very few per box), scarcity (low print numbers because they are old), history (play promos), legacy (one of the OG mini sets that was used as reference for future mini sets)).

The only cards I know are overpriced are the Japanese Hoenn starters. English Torchic is very expensive because of the low psa 10 pop count, but many people who are selling Japanese Torchic don’t know that and assume Torchic should be worth that much in general, and then they also overprice the other 2 starters because they assume that the Hoenn trio in general is always expensive.

The 3 Japanese Hoenn starters don’t have outstandingly low pop numbers like Mew, nor are they as popular as Charizard or Rayquaza, so they definitely shouldn’t be offered for the same price as these cards.

I don’t think Gold Stars are overrated. Underrated/rated? Probably.

  1. Lower print runs.
  2. Hard to find GSs in packs, especially pack fresh / PSA 10 quality.
  3. Most Gold Stars have Low pop graded reports.
  4. The artworks are incredible.
  5. The ‘Gold Star’ gold symbol next to Pokémon name looks cooler than a 1st ED symbol (you get both if you collect Japanese!)

Most copies out there are priced reasonably. PSA 8/9 and some PSA 10 are cheaper than certain overpriced, overprinted and overpopulated Modern PSA 10s.
