Wow and here I am thinking about when these were 15-18k last year lol
The long long ago
If you think that is low as a copy holder, I have to wonder what you think is fair?
Where are the greninja stonks?? All these lame gold stars getting all the attention
Theyâre in 2024
To be clearâŚthat price is certainly very fair. Probably more than fair.
To me personally? Itâs 'zard, itâs shiny, itâs a Gold StarâŚitâs a shiny zard thatâs a dark-typeâŚthereâs just a lot going for this card that 1st Edition Base is the only one iâm putting in front of it in terms of desirability for a Charizard.
In the collectibles world this card is still so âyoungâ that, at only 99 PSA 10 copiesâŚitâs one of the surest things there is to climb, imo.
I wouldnât even hazard a guess as to what its potential could be and frankly, I donât intend to sell so that thought is more amusing than anything. I just know that someone walking up to me with 4x wads of $10k bills wouldnât get me to consider yoinking my copy out of the vault.
Maybe in my 20s when I didnât own a house? Sure, I probably take the money and run. A couple years away from being 40, and already own a house? $40k doesnât move the overall âlife needleâ much, relatively speaking, when youâre already locked into a low pre-pandemic home interest rate.
All that to say, you should probably ask another copy holder what price they think is fair, lol. I certainly wouldnât blame any other owner if they all saw this go for $40k and immediately are making plans to offload the card right now. Iâm just not one of them.
Thread idea: can we have a PSA 10 Skyridge tracker? More specifically, a tracker for PSA 10 Skyridge Gengar and all the other cards I own.
I think this would be a very helpful thread to help the value of my collection and pat myself on the back.
Jokes aside, itâs kind of sad what this thread devolved into.
Itâs a 4 year old thread tracking and discussing the price of a specific set of cards, what part of it offends you in particular?
If the mods wanted to fold this and other âtrackerâ threads into the Giant English Market thread I donât think many people would be opposed (I certainly wouldnât).
The thread was originally more of a tracker of gold star (and shinings, but those are obviously lame and not worth as much so nobody wants to discuss them) populations over time. Since the Nov 2024 boom, however, itâs devolved into the same 2-3 users who clearly have a position bringing up every sale and feigning surprise.
I donât think thereâs a problem with the thread itself but the shift in behaviour and intent is a reflection of the current landscape of collecting where everyone wants to loudly wave dollar signs around showing how much their cards investments have grown. We went from âgee, I wonder how many of these cards are out there?â to âmy Gold Star Ray is over 10k I can finally sleep at night again!â
Alright, iâll bite since iâm one of the âsame 2-3 usersâ postingâŚ
I honestly find your comment ironic because iâm someone that gets offended when people find out I have Gold Stars and tell me things like, âwow bro, good job picking those up way back then!â as if it was some kind of stroke of luck or an investment that has transformed into whatever the hell market price they are nowâŚas opposed to me falling in love with the cards a decade ago and making it into a personal goal to collect them since that time.
Iâll bow out of the thread because iâm apparently âfeigning surpriseâ and âclearly have a positionâ in some cards iâve had for a very long time that I donât intend to sell.
What I will say though is you are pretty extremely off the mark as far as painting me into being whatever type of collector you apparently think i am.
Iâll admit, I went too far back there with some of those comments. I donât think that was fair to you, so Iâll offer my apology.
However, what confuses me is if you have been collecting these cards for so long and donât intent to sell like you say, why keep posting sales and IG posts with prices in big typeface, messaging that is meant to create hype and FOMO and then saying âstill low, imoâ? To me, that sounds counter to what you had just said.
Anyway, I think I will also bow out of this thread as the direction is no longer relevant to the reasons I visit E4.
Iâll be 100% with you - you were definitely reading too much into it. I post the IG sales because they are what I see and itâs direct from Z&Gâs âconfirmed paidâ posts so that it doesnât look like âspeculation.â Since most people kind of know that they are the prime avenue for Gold Stars and other cards selling at these ârecordâ prices. But I also know some people have completely tuned out Z&G posts on principle and thus maybe arenât seeing the Shining and GS prices from them.
No apology needed, I can see from your perspective how you would make some assumptions about my posts in this thread. But I assure you I donât fit into some hypebeast post-pandemic collector mold (not like my E4 join date isnât 2016 or anything) or someone trying to drum up hype. Itâs not even just the Gold Stars, if you scrolled through the thread I did post about Shinings as well.
But yeah, this is a pretty good example (to me) of how the state of the market has such a profound impact on the hobby that people will make assumptions about a thread on E4/a user making certain posts and automatically assume ill-intent from those posts despite there not being a single degree of truth to any of those assumptionsâŚso yeah. This thread has run its course for me.
Thanks for clarifying. I can see where youâre coming from now. Itâs important for me to remember that even the most hyped cards out there have people who genuinely want them.
I do think the recent market trends have burned me out to some extent. Itâs tiresome when even on a forum like e4, you see people focus on dollar amounts with no end in sight. Money will always be a factor in collecting Pokemon cards, but as a wise rabbit once said, it should be what limits us from getting more cardboard, not the reason we buy cardboard.
Anyway, thank you for your patience and understanding. I overstepped back there.
I see price go up, me brain happy
Lol jokes aside,
I think if you watch any 10 minute video about pokemon online, you will run into the value chase of cards and the value appreciation. It is really all most of us talk about day to day. I donât think it is necessarily bad or illintent, I think it is fun and exciting sometimes to get into something that later increases in popularity or is more valuable in the market. For me, it gives me a sigh of relief knowing I already own the card and Donât have to fomo or scramble to get the card that I put off. But instead sit back and appreciate the card/item.
I donât think we need to pretend that something that increases in value is inherently bad, but I do believe it isnât something we need to keep drilling into the ground.
There are some on here that were able to buy the card and rest easy or increase their livelihood by selling, and those who missed out or who couldnât by the card at those cheaper prices back then and instead grief the loss of a card they may never be able to afford.
Just the nature of collectable items such as these⌠It is what makes it exciting to finish a collection or goal.
The chase, acquisition, and the occasional sale
I was surprised too, but I can guarantee it went through.
Really good price, even though I would have considered it a weak 10. I remember seeing a couple others sell for around $7000 before this one
fake comp, pretty sure that is my cert which ive sold after
actually yeah that one was def one of mine coz i remember someone bringing me that comp and i was like dafuq u on then i checked the cert
this account is part of an instagram sphere where itâs cool to post pictures of rolexes next to pokemon cards. i think that tells you all you need to know about it. when someone consistently emphasizes the monetary side of the âhobbyâ in order to drum up hype, they donât have honest intentions
