Might grab the pikachu funko to throw in the safe alongside my other pikas
I have about 25 pop vinyls and 5 other vinyls by funko, most of them still in box and in pop protectors. I don’t actively collect them, but if I happen to run into one I want I’ll pick it up.
So it’s a big variety of a bunch of random pop culture stuff I like.
I would not collect ALL of the Pokemon if they released them, but i would surely pick up a few key ones.
The good thing about collecting cards is that they don’t take up much space. Pops are pretty small, but stack up quick.
The main problem I have with Funko Pops is their terrible quality control. They are mass produced to the point where QC is basically nonexistent. It’s cool that they are affordable and one exists of basically any character you can think of, but when you put them next to figures like Nendoroids from Japan, Funkos look like Happy Meal toys in comparison.
Target exclusive means this will be a pain to acquire
Generalization. That’s like saying all Pokemon cards are affordable. Sure, most of them are, but one of the reasons Pops have stuck around for so long is because there is a lot of exclusivity and limited print runs. Lots of these fetch for high dollar and there is a pretty big collectors market for this. It attracts more people than a lot of niche collectibles because there is something for everyone.
Every year at Comic Con, Funko has a big booth setup. You are not allowed to simply go up and purchase though, you have to be pre-selected and have a ticket. Otherwise they tell you to take a hike. This is because they always have exclusive merch there.
Doing a quick ebay search, I see that:
Disney Aladdin Metallic GENIE 54 Vinyl SDCC 2013 Limited 480 RARE Mint - sold for $1,295
Funko Pop Vinyl Han Solo and Luke Skywalker storm trooper ECCC 2011 RARE - sold for $1,515.00
BATGIRL #03 METALLIC CHASE - Funko Pop - NIB DC UNIVERSE Ultra RARE Grail Vinyl - sold for $928
There is even a side market for prototypes. Usually unpainted or half complete. A Batman sold for $300 recently.
These are basically Beanie Babies. Change out cheap partially-filled bean animals with cheap vinyl half-ass versions of characters.
my girlfriend collects POP figures but i’ll be getting any Pokemon ones
It’s because they have a revolving door of intellectual property to choose from. Most Exclusive POPs aren’t worth that much more than regular retail releases.
POPs probably won’t stand the test of time because eventually people will get tired of buying the exact same thing over and over again… but certain POPs will be desirable because of the IP behind them. IP like Marvel or Disney don’t have a collectible item or market unto itself except for 30+ year old comic books and collectors will collect anything related to that IP.
They’re really not comparable to Pokemon cards (or even MtG or yugioh) where people collect only 1 product line and the IP behind the the hobby has been around for 20+ years. They’re really just a reincarnation of beanie babies with no original designs.
The other issue is that “exclusive” in the 2010s might mean a controlled release but it doesn’t mean that there’s truly a small supply of them, EVERYTHING is mass produced. This Pikachu might be only available at Target and scalpers might try and buy them out to flip on ebay but eventually as the demand of the truly desperate collectors are satisfied the prices will drop as it’s restocked.
they were released today
That’s a NO and a resounding NO.
I’m not going to hate on someone else’s hobby by any means, but I legitimately do not see the appeal.
The moulds are all near identical and those soulless eyes don’t do much to set them apart from one-another.
Nendroids on the other hand look pretty sweet, I don’t collect toys but whenever I see a picture of them crop up on Instagram I’ll usually leave a like, the expressions and quality really go along way to give the impression; at least in my opinion that they have more artistic merit.
I’m really interested to see how Funko Pops do in the future though, like really interested.
1.yes, only recently. Just like pokemon there are exclusive collectible items. They actually cater to the general public who like cheap 10-15 collectibles and also the $200+ collectibles for the hardcore collectors, something pokemon isnt that great about. Granted this does make flipper mania because you can buy a pop at retail for $20 and sell it for $200, but then again people do that in pokemon anyways except with graded cards. Its even worse in pokemon because you can take a $100 cards and turn it into a $1000 card.
- Maybe if they made like an exclusive charizard.
Ill play devils advocate and say that its not that feasible that it’ll stand the test of time as far as high end pops (I thinks pops will be around for years to come though) because they’re too cheap and easily replicated. Theres pops worth $6k+ and i havent seen any replication but idk whos to say there arent any.
For those comparing to beanie babies, we are talking nostalgia with these pops just like pokemon. An exclusive Batman pop isnt worth a lot because people love funko but rather because they love batman.
Does anyone here avidly collect them? I have recently gotten into trying to obtain the more difficult to acquire funkos, was wondering if anyone else here was in the same boat!
I think the only one I would ever buy would be Cubone…or possibly Slowpoke.
Hmm, if they looked better visually I probably would have liked to collect them
Ill just leave this here…

Couple of weeks late there ![]()
Star wars collectors will want rare star wars pops.
Marvel fans will want rare MCU pops.
Maybe one day people will just be sick of them and I think that’s going happen but there’s a few more years in them yet.
The key difference from Pokemon cards (or any tcg) is that there’s no nostalgic or emotional attachment to the pops themselves, but rather the IP behind them.
Pops are a very strong cash cow but they’re not going to have the inter-generational appeal of the IPs they license.

I collect them
I’m doing the toy story set atm ![]()
After watching that video… maybe Funko is doomed lmao
“worst IPO in 17 years”
“500M in sales and only 4M in NOI for 2017”
The rights to the pops are on their way to Macfarlane toys at this rate
