[End of the journey. Final Update] Pictures of interesting cards I found in Japan

To be honest. The last sold prices I found were around the same. Maybe 10-20% more. Keep in mind these cards are EX-LP.

Victory medal was around the 80-90 I think.

Shoutout to that wall of vending

Thanks for the updates.

My opinions, or what I would do:

Toyota Promos: Pikachu and Arcanine → Easy Buy at those prices. They look very clean and are super underrated promos. Really iconic art and just great overall cards.

image
The individual price seems a bit high. Usually the Regis’s PLAY promos tend to sell as a bundle and you can find better deals for it on the set. Maybe you can try and see if you can group them.

image
This Charizard promo is really good. It is a battle road prize card. I would value a pretty clean raw copy around 25 - 30K Yen.

Giratina = Yes. Pikachu = No (too much for the bronze medal card)

image
Good price. I would buy this instantly.

These are fair prices (not cheap) for the cards individually, but I believe getting the whole set is much cheaper, unless you are missing some from the set.

image
Fair price to buy this as well.

The rest seem to be not worthwhile buying (lower tier promos, which are at fair market prices) and the SCREAM promos are a bit high. Sorry my knowledge is limited only to Promos. Also I am basing my opinion based on what I see from these promos on the secondary market on a daily basis.

Cheers!

Would you mind sharing which Book Off that is? That’s an unusually well stocked one!

A lot of people don’t know this, but the ______'s part of this Mew is actually supposed to say “Zork’s”

Loving these photos thank you for the updates!

There are also 2 celebration fanfare promos which I missed. Both the 2021 and 2022 version. Depending on the condition I think they are also market fair price.

Cheers!

damn always love to see updates, so many interesting cards everytime!!

side question:
does anyone know if having light constantly on them damage the cards at all? or is the amount too little to do any meaningful damange even for extended periods of time? perhaps UV protecting sleeves?

Depending on the kind of light used. If it’s led light, I don’t think there will be any damage as led emits insignificant UV amount. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Just to preface, since I am a binder collector, I feel I am inept when it comes to the minute details of card condition. For me, the prices are OK if it is for a clean copy. Clean copy means a very clean front, and no noticeable scratches on the holos, but it can have some some whitening. As it states on the Japanese websites “No noticeable scratches and dirt”, Ideally that would be PSA 8?

That being said:

Pretty solid price if it is a clean copy. I think these cards feel skewed with some sales being too expensive. 13k - 18k Yen for a clean copy would be a good price.

Same for the corocoro mew. For this price, it will have some kind of edgewear or some white chips. The issue with this card is that it is so popular, the prices are completely absurd for a NM - M copy. A very clean front and minimal edgewear, this will be a superb price.

PLAY Kyogre and Rayquaza. I would really like to have these 2 as a set with the Groudon. Thats when you can apply for the set price, which can be cheaper because the seller can get rid of 3 cards. Rayquaza is the most expensive, with Kyogre and Groudon at the same price. I would rate the price for all the 3 cards at 18k - 20K Yen. So in my opinion, the 2 prices seem fair for clean copies.

Way too expensive. Better prices easy on Mercari JP.

I would say these are great prices to buy for clean cards. I would buy them. The Easter Pikachu is hidden by the bar, but it is surprisingly hard to find. I would price it at 12K - 16K Yen.

221/XY-P (first 2 cards) I think it is fair market value.
However, the Tohoku Pikachu cards (3 copies) seems to be under-values. So if these are clean, I would buy them easy at these prices. Seems like a great deal.

image
If they are clean copies, these are good prices for the birds. Buy it as a set and check if you can negotiate for a discount. Depending on the individual going price and if they are clean I would put the whole set for 10K Yen

This 2 would be an interesting buy. These are the Victory medals but from 2005 since they have no promo mark as seen for the other silver medals. These are the first set of silver victory medals released for the gym challenge series. The Gold medal is one of the rarest cards, so you can pick up the Silver. Its not super rare, but hard to come by. If the card is clean, this is a good price.

Thanks for the updated pics. Overall, most cards seem to have some warpage, not sure if that affects the price, and its not technically a condition flaw. I am not sure if you can negotiate the pricing if you buy a few together. May Arceus shower you with good deals.

Cheers!

Hi OP and e4 folks, I am going to Tokyo next week - may i ask if these photos are from Akihabara shops or elsewhere?

Would you guys have any LGS recommendations? I heard Akihabara is completely devoid of supply of all things but not sure how valid this news is

I am looking for sealed VStar and hopefully a NM set of Masaki Promos

Hey Man
As always I really really appreciate your input and good observation skills. Sadly most cards in these stores are not clean so I would never go with the assumption of 8 or higher.

That’s one thing. When shopping here in Japan you always have to assume PSA 6-8 where most are definitely on the 6 side.

With one exception. Today I found a store that had almost only 8-10s there and I spend around 1000$ because even pre grading these cards are worth twice as much. But more to that after my journey in a big post

Advice to everyone that wants to go cars shopping in Japan.
I can not stress enough. If you want to find the real treasures in Japan go to the smaller cities that are not Kyoto, Osaka or Tokyo. These cities have good deals as well but it’s way harder to find them because they have so many people scouting their shops.

If you have any questions about these things let me know.

I completely agree that you are the best judge of condition when you can inspect the card in-person. I am hoping with my replies to give an indication of the going prices I see on the secondary market. I also might be off on some cards, but I am sure when you are browsing card prices in many shops, you too by now, have a good indication of what the asking prices are across the shops and where to find a good deal.

I am very grateful to your posts since it gives me personally a comparison price on what is being asked in the shops as compared to YJP and Mercari JP. So I have a refernce value on what I should be paying. TBH, I suck when it comes to condition or rather get very impatient with it because my brain goes, good - not good as they seem to look the same in a binder.

Looking forward to this and your overall experience. Wishing you a pleasant and safe journey as always and looking forward to more updates.

Cheers!

Heyho
maybe my post after your Post helps a bit with expectation management.
I would not get my hopes up for an sealed stuff. I went to Tokyo and found zero to none vintage sealed. If you are looking for cards then you will find them but probably not in clean condition. Maybe think about a trip outside of Tokyo. There your chances will rise immensely.

But one thing I learned in general. Vintage sealed is more than rare in Japan.

Final Updates from Kōbe.
It was such a joy to explore this city.
Weirdly enough there was a shop that only sold English cards and English sealed.

Seeing HY2M 1/12 scale zaku & rx-78 is just as impressive, probably not for sale but they cost an arm & a leg lol

Those prices for English cards are absolutely absurd! The Misty’s Determination really jumped out at me, 3800 yen is just under $29 USD. NM copies are about $10-11 right now on TCGPlayer. Even factoring in it is possibly a mint copy, that pricing is nuts.
