EN Gastly Master Collection List

Always loved the Lavender Fog and decided to master set it. Most all of the references I scrolled, or even peoples personal “complete” collections, were incomplete so I took it upon myself to create what I am almost positive is a complete English Master Set list for ol’ No. 92.

If you happen to see anything thats incorrect or missing please feel free to reach out so the fixes can be made.

Thanks for looking and happy collecting

The living list can be found here

Welcome and best of luck with your Gastly collection.

One variant missing seems to be the different codes for the EX FireRed & LeafGreen set. I’m not sure if both the non-error Common and error Uncommon of Gastly are available for all three codes, but non-holo Commons from that set should have three different codes. The ones of Gastly should be N2L-DDG-EK1; N2L-DDG-GUU; and N2L-DDG-ZTR (only the last three alphanumeric characters differ).

And since I noticed you’ve added the Expedition Base Set Sample card to your checklist, which I’d personally deem a nice-to-have unofficial release, there is also the Matchprint for the same set (with two known copies in existence). You can see it and more information about this color-proof sample card here.

Best of luck with your collection!

Thanks so much for the welcome and sharing this information! First off, just to confirm, the only difference between the non-holo commons are the codes? And secondly, would the Matchprint samples have come before the NY samples or before the official release of the set?

PS: Any idea why almost every single listing I find for the FR/LG holo are listed as reverse holo?

Yes, just the codes are different, nothing else.

And I’m pretty sure the Sample Gastly with Japanese back came before the Matchprint. The Sample Pikachu also has a different font and layout compared to the Expedition Base Set Gastly, which were made for the NY demo before the set was finalized. The Matchprint was just a color test, which I assume was just before the actual Expedition Base Set. This is just an educated guess though, I’m not 100% sure.

And no idea why you mostly see Reverse Holofoils. Maybe because they’re more popular to list. :person_shrugging:
EDIT: Ah, I misread. I thought I read ‘why do I only see Reverse Holofoils being listed’, but you were confused about the EX era Reverse Holofoils vs the regular Reverse Holos of most sets. Mb. Luckily the other people did read that sentence correct, and answered it.

I’ll get those three codes added to my list post haste and keep an eye out for their existence with the errors and holo.

I’d say that’s a rather fair assumption on chicken vs egg and how I was leaning as well.

The reverse conundrum is a real head scratcher because it even appears on all the slabs I’ve seen… and they’re clearly…not?

Welcome!

The reverse holos from the EX era were different from todays versions. Depending on the set some of them were even holo only on the artbox. This applies for FR/LG. Sometimes these holos are also called parallel holos.

To follow up on @Gottdrak’s response, here are what the reverse holos for the EX era looked like (I made a poll sometime last year). FRLG had the special holo pattern in the art box, but these were the reverse holos for the set.

Can confirm that EX FireRed & LeafGreen uncommon error has all three codes presenting as well. Looked through all available stock of the reverse holo on the bay and as far as I can tell so far, there is only one code for those but will continue the search.

edit: upon returning from my adventures I think it’s relatively safe to say that the reverse holo common and uncommon error only have one code between them :face_exhaling:

In case your notes don’t reflect, I wanted to circle back and share that the Flight of Legends Gastly has four different codes present in both 1st edition and unlimited for a total of 8. As far as I’ve been able to gather there is no holo/reverse holo in the set nor rarity error

DJL-94G-C66, DJL-94G-F3X, DJL-94G-NB5, and DJL-94G-P0P

What is it with this particular Gastly/era that warranted there being differing codes on these cards?

Since you mentioned you were only collecting English Gastly cards, I hadn’t mentioned the different codes of the Japanese Flight of Legends set. I was indeed aware of them, but thanks for the heads up nonetheless. A lot of the EX era sets have different codes. Here an overview of which sets are released in which languages, where I also mention which EX-era sets have multiple codes available: Sets and Languages: Compilation overview list.

Here also an Excel with all the different codes in English: Pokemon TCG ex Serial Codes - Google Sheets and Japanese/Korean: Pokemon TCG ex Serial Codes - Japanese - Google Sheets (taken from this thread: Complete List of ex Era Serial Code Numbers - #21 by tonysandlin).

The exact purpose of these codes have always been a mystery, and even more so why there are different codes for certain cards. The only thing we know about those codes are, to quote myself from an earlier thread:

Does this mean I should expect to see varying codes on the Legend Maker card as well?

No. EX Legend Maker didn’t have multiple codes.

The English sets with multiple codes (3 for non-holo Commons; 2 for non-holo Uncommons): EX Ruby & Sapphire through and including EX Delta Species (minus EX Magma vs Team Aqua, which they skipped). The EX era sets after that, EX Legend Maker through EX Power Keepers were without multiple codes.

And in Japanese, the sets with multiple codes (4 for Commons; 2 for Uncommons): Expansion Pack through and including Mirage Forest (again skipping Magma vs Aqua: Two Ambitions).

You can see it in the threads and Excels I’ve shared in my previous comments.

Thank you kindly, went and tracked down all but one of the Mirage Forest I needed :face_in_clouds: So if I’m not mistaken the only Japanese ones that Gastly hits with regards to that are MF and FoL?

Yep, that’s indeed correct. 2x four codes each for Gastly in those two sets you mentioned, Flight of Legends and Mirage Forest (four for 1st edition, and the same four for unlimited edition).

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that there is someone in Australia trying to sell a ghastly masterset on Facebook that is missing like 2 cards.
I’ll see if i can find the post and I’ll link it here
