E4 Pokémon VGC Tournament - Generation 5

What’s always been funny to me is how many people like singles lmao

Idk that I’ll join for voice but i’m usually trying a couple of practice matches a day so if im online i’ll be there

Ye it’s weird how Smogon players act like singles is the only format that matters…always put me off.

I do wish the official games had more doubles focused campaigns. Weird how they’re all single battles and then they just expect you to know doubles for VGC.

I will hop in voice in about 30 minutes or so if anyone wants to join

Yeah it’s weird tpc/tpci/game freak have just kind of relied on the bootstrapped community support and mechanic learning for vgc. I’ve never thought the games were particularly good at explaining. BDSP has a competitive e4 jumpscare of properly ev’d and iv’d teams and most players blitzed through the story and got cooked

Hi every1,

Here are 6 sample teams i built all using different strategies for you to use. All of these are already good enough to work on their own but i would suggest editing them for your own style.

i will put a very small description for each but feel free to msg me on discord (Tryson21). I can extend more on how every pokemon is intended to be used or possible improvements based on your playstyle. You can also send your teams and ill have a look for you and make some suggestions

Rain Team: Rain
This is a fairly simple rain team, use politoad as your setter and keep him alive! Ludicolo and kingdra are used as your fast sweepers and raikou does big damage or can set up. Amoongus is used as a support for redirection and spore. It will also be slower than most things in trick room. Finally, Scizor can be used as a stand alone Pokemon, how to use it will be matchup dependent.

Sun: https:https:Sun
Similar to rain, Ninetails is your setter, keep it alive incase of wether reset. Venusaur will be very fast and bulky thanks to chlorophyl, putting things to sleep and doing nice stab damage. Charizard is the hardest hitting pokemon with choice specs and solar power, but be careful he is frail. The last 3 are supports, Lando therian can do big damage but is mainly there for intimidate, Thundo is there to disrupt opponents and deal with water types. finally Hitmontop is just a generally good support for vs spread moves, fake out, and intimidate.

Trick room: Trick room
For this team you need trick room up, so you have defensive cresselia which can support and set up trick room and offensive Reuniclus with magic guard to not take damage from life orb wwhile getting the damage buff. Amoongus will disrupt and move first in TR, it can spore and redirect moves to itself making it annoying. Escavalier is a generally strong pokemon with a really nice typing, with swordsdance it can do huge damage physically. Lando therian is the standard set where it can pivot in and out with uturn and its intimidate. Finally Ttar, slow set with sandstorm to stop opposing weathers but will not hurt your team due to their typings/ abilities, also just a generally really solid pokemon where its tying is the only thing to hold it back.

Sand: Sand
SInilar to most weather teams, you have your setter, ttar, a really strong and bulky setter who can also do huge damage. Landorus, with sheerforce it doesn’t take life orb damage but still gets the buff, you can use it to set up and sweep. Excadrill is faster thanks to sand rush and will do big damage for you. Scizor and latias will fill similar rolls as generally good pokemon. in most conditions and can do big damage. Finally rotoms typing and moves make it one of the best disruption tools for this team with wilowisp and trick.

Defense team: general defensive 1
This team concentrates on keeping itself alive while slowly taking out your opponents. Cress and amoongus are disruption and create extra bulk for the team. Lando will intimidate and uturn to more bulky mons. Tornadus can taunt other pokemon and make your team faster with tailwind, and finally heatran and Conkeldurr are really strong and bulky pokemon who can both do chip and big damage.

Offense team: General offensive 1
This teams goal is to quickly do big damage and take out your opponent. Latias, Vocarona, and Hydreigon will do big damage with minimal set up. they are supported with Tornadus for speed control, Bronzong to set up bulk so they dont easily die, and hitmontop for fake out + intimidate support.

Feel free to use or edit these teams for the upcoming tourney and let me know if there are any questions. You can also once again send your teams or edits on discord to me (Tryson21) (also sorry if there are any spelling mistakes, i wrote this fast.)

Hi everyone, a reminder that there’s only a week left to sign up for the tournament (I’m extending the deadline to Sunday, Feb 2 at midnight PDT). We’ve got quite a few people on board but it would be great to have more! You don’t need to have previous competitive experience to join and there are lots of great resources and members that can help get you up to speed with the Gen 5 meta!

For those of you entering VGC, remember to submit your team to me for the tournament. If you’re having trouble with teambuilding check out this meta analysis from @silversnorlax204 and these sample teams from @Tryson21 (feel free to just use his teams too, that’s fair game).
