Awesome, looking forward to having you compete! Top 500 is quite good considering how competitive S&V VGC is. I believe @Tryson21 achieved that peak in the past too.
@ddk probably lose first round but add me to OU singles also plz
Sign ups for both brackets so far! Keep em’ coming!
VGC: 13
Singles: 11
If you signed up for VGC, remember you have until the end of the month to submit a team (DM me). This will be the team you use for the entire tournament.
Please refer to this post for instructions on how to submit a team: E4 Pokémon VGC Tournament - Generation 4 - #61 by silversnorlax204
edit: the format is VGC 2013 not VGC 2009 but the steps are the same
In for both!
Glad to have you on board! What is your skill level in both Singles and VGC?
I know of smogon tier lists for like casual playthrus of the games - but no actual showdown or comp experience, so should be interesting!
Sign me up fo VGC only ![]()
In that vein, I’d be keen to do more discord voice practice sessions. I tried practicing on the ladder but couldn’t find an opponent (maybe that was unlucky, but still!)
Would also be good to discuss some team ideas

Quick entrant update for both brackets. Remember you have until Jan 31, 2025 to register for the tournament.
VGC: 15
Singles: 12
If anyone wants to hold some teambuilding workshops for Gen 5 VGC over Discord voice call this week, let me know @silversnorlax204 @caughtatpoint @Tryson21 @SeasidePokemon
I had been thinking about tonight (though forgot to post here), but tomorrow night will probably be better. I suspect more than one session will be required.
I did manage to play a couple of games on the ladder however; this format feels extremely fun.
I think I can jump on tonight if anyone is free. 6PM EST for me, would love to team build and maybe get some practice in.
I think it would be wise to declare “open testing time” on discord (voice) after 7:00 PM (EST) until the 31st.
Come and try your teams or just talk theory-moning.
VGC guys need their practice sessions so I hope to see you all there!
For those of you looking for good teams from 2013: Pokémon VGC 2013 World Championships | Nimbasa City Post
I agree, this will be really helpful. We did these last time for Gen 4 and they’re a great way to learn the format, prepare a team and get some practice in.
I’ve put together a quick snapshot and breakdown of top tier mons from the 2013 world championships. Hopefully those of you just starting out can get a better picture of why these pokemon are as good as they are.
Usage stats for 2013 meta:
Cressilia:
As we saw with the previous Gen 4 tournament Cressy is no slouch and an absolute TANK of a pokemon. Having over 50% usage makes a ton of sense as it’s a Pokémon that MUST be doubled to take down. “surely there is a way to OHKO this in 2013?” you might think to yourself, and yes I ran some calcs. Here is what OHKO’s cressy in this meta: (Cressy is calculated at max HP and no defensive investment or beneficial defensive nature)
| Tyranitar (Doubles OU Choice Band) | Crunch | 84.2 - 100% | 6.3% chance to OHKO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Escavalier (UU Offensive) | Megahorn | 127 - 150% | guaranteed OHKO |
| Heracross (UU Choice Band) | Megahorn | 120.2 - 141.8% | guaranteed OHKO |
| Durant (UU Choice Band) | X-Scissor | 99 - 117.5% | 93.8% chance to OHKO |
| Rhyperior (UU Choice Band) | Megahorn | 87.3 - 103.1% | 25% chance to OHKO |
| Durant (UU Hone Claws) | X-Scissor | 86.7 - 102.4% | 18.8% chance to OHKO |
Considering T-tar is the only meta pokemon that has a 6.3 percent chance to KO (and STILL not a guaranteed KO after sand) there are a lot of reasons to utilize cress to set up a trick room or lead off with a faster icy wind to set the speed control in your favor. Cress also takes a number of boosted hits either from specs or gems on a switch in making it a great way to disrupt an opponents offensive surge.
Tyranitar:
Being able to set sand is still a good thing in 2013. Giving Sp. Def boosts this gen and being able to have teammates utilize their sand boosting abilities is very good. Ttar also threatens genies with rock stab and other standard meta threats just from type coverage and a massive attack stat. This thing kind of speaks for itself in terms of viability so be sure to have, at a minimum, a check against him.
Landorus:
One of the strongest and safest piviots in the game. With a decent speed stat, good defensive typing and murderous attack stat Lando remained a top tier VGC pick for generations to come. Access to U turn allows for multiple switches per game helping to get intimidate off to help further cripple offensive physical pressure from an opponent. Lando’s move pool is also diverse enough to run plenty of coverage options. Earthquake, knock off, super power, u turn, rock slide/stone edge, are all scary options to prep for coming off a base 140 attack stat.
Thunderus:
A tale of two genies. Thunderus is deadly as it has the ability to run either a very powerful special attacking set with boosted thunderbolts and a gem for flexibility. Or, more commonly, a prankster support set that can chip with boosted electric moves. Typically the prankster version is utilized more and has a very easy time shutting down top threats with taunt and thunder wave. It also has defensive utility with the use of leftovers/sitrus berry and substitute and protect to force opponents to hit a slot they otherwise don’t want to deal with. The biggest issue with Thunderus is figuring out speed EV’s for other fast mons in the tier.
Amoongus:
A perfect abuser of trick room, defensive pivot, redirection user, spore and regenerator. The list goes on for what makes this mushroom for everything it can do. While offensively this mon is challenged it more than makes up for it with it’s defensive playstyle and ability to redirect. Even set up sweepers (outside steel types) are able to be rendered ineffective with the use of clear smog coming from Amoongus. This little shroom only really dislikes prankster versions of thunderus as taunt shuts it down pretty quickly.
Will definitely try and be on tonight. This format is probably the most fun I’ve played
@silversnorlax204 This is an amazing breakdown of how high level players, and probably some low and most mid tier players figure out their teams.
Yeah, i was going with because they look cool and some attacks sound strong. Im gonna be so cooked in this tournament ![]()
i can look at the meta teams from back then or make a few sample teams for people if ya want
but im down to call to explain some stuff if people have any questions lol
Been having so much fun with vgc I’ve got no plans at all for singles
Yes please post any sample teams here, that will help people so much ![]()
I like how Singles has become the side bracket now
