Iāve never owned any pets as a kid (unless the fishes in the garden pond count), since my parents didnāt allow it. (Kinda hypocritical if youād ask me, since both of them owned 10+ pets when they were kids , from dogs and cats, to horses and turtles, to pidgeons and a raven, etc.)
Therefore, Iāve always thought Iād immediately get a pet once I started living on my own and got into a rhythm. But now that I have been living on my own for little over two years, and have considered it a few times, I donāt think Iām getting a pet anytime soon.
Ngl though, I do miss seeing animals in my garden more and more these days. My parents always had a rather big garden, and in the little village theyāre still living right now, youād see multiple different birds almost every day, in rare occasions even a stork or woodpecker. In comparison, Iāve only seen two birds (both magpies) in my āgardenā in 2+ years time. (And yes, I hang bird food in autumn/winter and have a little birdbath with water year around, but that doesnāt help much either. I guess where I live isnāt nearly rural enough to attract animals in general.) My parents also have a 5x5 meters pond with mostly fishes, but also some frogs and salamanders. So I might make a little pond in my garden one day, once I have time to do so and considered the available options with the little space I have.
I donāt have a pet and I probably never will. Donāt need the hassle.
I like birdfeeders. You get to enjoy their beauty, observe their interactions, and all you have to do is make sure thereās enough sunflower seeds and fat balls to go around. Tits, magpies, crows, jackdaws, woodpeckers, fieldfares, finches. Every now and then something rare will show up, and youāll be able to tell assuming you know your birds.
I have a cat and I love cats in general, but I voted ferrets because I owned one when I was a kid and I miss it. Theyāre pure souls, full of energy, and incredibly personable: however theyāre much harder to take care of, and unfortunately pretty short lived too.
