Do you think Vintage will ever get to the point where most are priced out?

Do you think vintage will ever get to the point where only those with alot of money can buy them?

I mean PSA 8,9 and 10s. Sealed packs. Even unlimited sets of wotc and early ex.

Thoughts?

You have to define specifically what “out of reach” is.

But generally speaking, no; I don’t think vintage set cards will ever be out of reach aside from some 1st Edition Base holos.

i dont think it will ever be out of reach. You will be priced out from certain cards though (we all are)

Since post covid, the prices of vintage cards like gold stars, shining and ex cards have dipped and many collectors including me have taken the opportunity to grab some of them while we still can. But don’t think the dip will last long. Many listings in my ebay watch list are slowly increasing price or being sold. Not as fast as Japanese waifus but surely and gradually. My 2 cents observation.

After I complete base set my next goal is going to be ex cards from 04/05. The cards are so nice

For unlimited graded 7-9 range, there won’t come a day anytime soon where the average collector wouldn’t be able to purchase a few of the ones they like.

There is always that option to go unlimited vs 1st edition, and always the option to go down a grade level.

Sort of an arbitrary question given “a lot of money” can be defined many different ways. Two people that make the same exact amount of money may have completely different discretionary spending budgets and appetites for collecting.

Over the last 27 years vintage cards have generally increased in value, so it’s reasonable to assume that may continue. But the speed at which they increase in relation to collectors income and appetite is an unanswerable question that only time will tell.

Most financial barriers can be overcome with time and saving, but there will always be a cluster of cards that will be unobtainable for the average collector (e.g., PSA 10 1st Ed Base, PSA 10 Crystal Cards, PSA 10 Gold Stars, etc.).

A lot of variables, but I dont think it will easily happen to psa 8-9 of unlimited set cards. The number of card printed is enough to satisfy collector’s demand for many years imho: charizard, lugia, rayquaza, umbreon, mew, whatever fan favorite, will grow more than others, but I hope it will be self limiting.

Psa10, first edition, sealed: I think It can happen? People with serious amount of money will obviously gravitate towards these.

It would be useful to define what you mean for being ‘priced out’, since like others said you can theoretically save money for years and buy a trophy card like you would buy a car or an apartment.
Also I bet that a lot of more casual collectors would never buy a card for 1k+ €, so many are already being priced out on several items,

Vintage base-rocket unlimited might as well be literally unlimited. Pretty sure those will be widely available and affordable for at least another 50 years.

unlimited wotc boxes will be on pwcc and heritage until the sun burns out

You’ve used that one up now lol.

It’s true. I’m so tired of seeing them. People think they’re so scarce but if all it takes is waiting for the next heritage quarterly auction it is not so special

I think 1st Ed Base holos are almost at that point now to some degree (depends on grade), and people are going for Shadowless/Unlimited more and more it seems. However, you can still get 1st Ed holos quite reasonably if you hunt around or go for lower grades. For example, I bought a 1st Ed Charizard in PSA 5 and honestly it’s in nice shape to me. So the barrier to entry is still somewhat flexible. High grades will be the first to become unobtainable for a lot of people, the 10s are really at that point I think similar to MTG Alpha or some old Sports cards.

I also think Skyridge holos could become increasingly out of reach as well and possibly some of the Neo Destiny Shinings. Some stuff in the EX era is also probably going to get there, like the Gold Stars.

Luckily there’s an absolute tonne of everything so even if higher grades do there is always raw and low grades so never have to miss out.

Skyridge holos actually aren’t too bad outside of Umbreon, Gengar, Gyarados and the Crystals (and even then Kabutops and Golem are still cheaper than other WOTC chase cards). The cards are relatively easy to grade and around half of the set is comprised of Pokemon that you can get in NM/PSA 9 for under $200. Everyone will have a different standard of being priced out of things, but Skyridge as a whole is nowhere near as inaccessible as Base 1st Edition holos or Gold Stars.

Skyridge was also offloaded to many WOTC employees as parting gifts (or so I have heard, it’s one of those things that probably can’t be confirmed) when they lost their Pokemon licence so there is likely a much higher mint supply out there than other sets

Skyridge is also a lot easier to grade in 10s

I’ve been talking to an old employee, and she has a binder of just mint Skyridge holos and nothing else. Multiple copies of each card. She got them when working at WOTC.
