Do you know the difference between ex and EX?

I voted yes, but I actually did not when I read the replies

not sure why they decided to do lowercase for the first era, but regardless, Scarlet and Violet exes are mechanically the same as gen 3’s exes in the sense that they are just beefed up versions of what they would be if they weren’t exes.

Let’s say Azumarill get’s an ex this gen. It will evolve from Marill. If it received an EX, it would not evolve from Marill.

Ahhh I see now! (Also thank you for talking in Marill terms hahaha)

So I think these ex differences do not apply to the original 2003 - 2007 era, all ex-era cards from there are lowercase, and cannot be basic Pokemon if an evolution.

But I think after that you are right about the Ex and EX differences in all later expansions, that is very interesting!

Just to add that:

  • Pokémon-EX, Pokémon GX and Pokémon V treat any and all Pokémon as stage Basic. I think GX and V are essentially evolutions of EX with additional quirks reflective of their generation (Mega Evolution, Z-Move, Gigantamax)
  • Scarlet & Violet is doing a past-present blend by taking the gen 3 ex mechanic to current HP/power levels and adding terastallisation has that quirk

that’s not true tho. only tag team GXs are always basics.

regular GXs are like exes except they have the GX power thing

edit: this is why so many players argue that SM-Lost Thunder format was the best modern format. After tag teams were introduced to the game and overpowered the evolving mechanics of other power GXes, the game turned and became “too fast” and unfun to them

oh yeah you’re right, my bad

How close is Scarlet & Violet to that level of play now that evolution is relevant again? SWSH 2022 will be on its last year of rotation this April and there will supposedly be 2 more years of ex this generation with a possibility of new mechanics in year 3

Many people really like it from what i can tell, however there are still quite a few powerful big basics like all of the future mons that are exes (roaring moon and iron hands mainly at this time)

Hey i feel better now. I debated on doing the same, stared at the answers for a long time, but my conscience got me

What about Mega pokes from XY?

Those weren’t basics and still had the EX

Edit: But they were in a weird category because they aren’t considered “stage 1” pokes either

Honestly, I did not know this so I have learnt something. I always thought it was just the style/font that they went with.

But to make matters even more convoluted, it’s capital “EX” for the Gen 3 set names even though the new type of Pokemon it represented are just “ex”

I’ll be honest, I usually just put “ex”, cuz I’m lazy. No capitals. No italics.
“Ex” is also the least confusing way to abbreviate “Excellent” when describing condition.

:face_vomiting: See how annoying and confusing that is?

those are M EXes. they evolve from EXes (which are always basics)

you could be pedantic and view them similarly to how VMAXes and VSTARs are also Vs, but we aren’t at the place where we need to distinguish Vs from vs or anything like that yet.
