I used to audit my collection quarterly: going through what I have, checking the market price of cards, determining what I am willing to sell, sorting through my wishlist, ensuring that cards are not missing, checking registry entries, organizing/reorganizing binders, etc.
I’ve slowed this down to once or twice per year. I still find it helpful and necessary for my collection, but it can be time-consuming.
Do you audit your collection? If so, how do you do it and how often?
I literally sift through slabs with rough estimates and then check if I’m close. If i am, i dont go deeper. If I’m off up or down ill do a dozen cards or so to try to keep up to date for trades possible sales etc
I don’t audit. I register every card I buy in a simple database with purchase price and approximated value, when I sell a card the approx value is blanked and a sale amount is entered. I color-coordinate what cards are: sold, to be listed, to be graded. As long as I keep up to date with this process (unfortunately, I don’t always), I don’t feel the need to check on my collection. Sure the value can change over time but if I list a card I’ve entered for sale I’ll always double check.
Before I kept a database I definitely ‘lost’ cards - cards I sold but couldn’t remember selling etc. and only had a rough idea of the overal value of my collection. The biggest hassle is finding specific cards in my collection, I should start keeping track of storagelocation as well.
I usually do this once per year. Going through my cards, checking the market value for the more valueable ones, deciding which cards I want to sell/buy, defining my future collection goals and so on.
to be honest I do not. I pretty much know most of the prices I got things at but I almost never check current prices (unless buying more of something). for a couple of modern cards I did try to use PokeData, but I forgot to use it after 2 weeks
while I do not think its a good practice, but I also do not have much time to go thru the process of checking prices
I have a db of what I own to keep track of everything because if I didn’t I would forget what I have because I make a ton of “fuck it” purchases. I do not bother checking market value at all, I could honestly care less if I gained or lost and it may affect me mentally or change my mentality in this hobby if I checked, so I just don’t do it. My opinion is, if money ever dictates what I do in collecting as a financial incentive, it is no longer a hobby and would be treated as another job. Therefore I collect what I like and have a db just to know what I have so I don’t buy doubles and see what I’m missing to finish sets or goals.
I keep up with prices somewhat, the good stuff mostly. I’m sure I would do more if I bought more frequently. I went from Toploaders to Cardsavers in 2020, and then I organized my bulk this last Christmas because a big piece of it was going out the door. That’s it I think.
I use price charting and ebay collections to track my collection. No need to audit, it does it for you with latest market price. For sealed prodcut i use pokedata, but that site is like two months behind market and is slow
I occasionally go through mine with a shotgun approach and just sporadically check the prices of random things to see if there are any unexpected surprises. I’ve tried doing databases, spreadsheets, etc. but it just sucks the fun out of it for me.
I’ve yet to find a website where I can catalog my collection entirely, most seem to just focus on “sets” and are always missing all sorts of promos. I’ve thought about creating a crowdsourced pokemon collection catalog website where people can just police it themselves but then I remember how lazy I am.
I will often put all of my graded cards into a pile and dive into them like Scrooge McDuck. Occasionally I will spread them out onto a mattress and make a snow-angel. Just the usual stuff like that.
I was doing it for a while, but now I don’t bother much. I do keep track of most things in my binder collection, but with slabs I just don’t really care much anymore. Some of the cards I have I only see up for sale once or twice a year, and other times I never see them. So it’s hard to get an accurate idea at times. I currently have no plans to move anything, just holding steady and continuing to buy what feel like deals when I see them.
No, though ive considered doing it in the past. I usually keep track of my purchases in a spreadsheet, like date, price, general info, but i only do it for graded cards. Otherwise, i dont rly track prices for things i own. Only look them up if im thinking of selling something
