I’ve had my DS with me for over a year now and while I really enjoyed the games when I was younger and get a great deal of nostalgia when I fire it up. I feel like I can’t get past like 10-15 minutes of the game before I get bored. Is it the part of growing older or has the internet just significantly shortened my attention span for more lax games?
Ex. Soulsilver, platinum. Thinking of starting mysery dungeon again since that’s more hands on fighting haha
Nope, I had plenty of fun starting up my Red Version, turning a Rattata into Mew and then turn the Mew blue which I wouldn’t imagine doing when I first play the game.
In R/B/Y and G/S/C I’ve scarcely ever seen such games with such replayability. I haven’t played in about a year and a half and as you made this thread I just so happen to be back at it (games on my couch as we speak) because my friend and I play 1v1 tournies, and it’s time to add to the roster! And every time I go through them—sure nothing is as magic as the first times or as childhood—but I am reminded of the infinity that is these games. Somehow with such a limited cartridge space, a small world, and repetitive nature, they did it better than thousands and thousands since. Oh and romhacks are very very fun and fulfilling when done right.
my newest guys I’m working on, getting to the bottom of the barrel here! If you’re considering beedrill you know you’ve nearly filled out the pokedex in roster.
I haven’t played the games vanilla for a long time. If I fire up any games now (which is not that often), I’ll either play rom hacks or artificial difficulty modes (e.g. nuzlockes). I find that imposing some ruleset (or playing a similar-ish game through rom hacks) can keep things interesting.
Right now, though, I’m playing through my first Mystery Dungeon game
Just curiosity, in my understanding, the reason we repeat play the old games is because of the nostalgia and trying to recapture the feelings we had as kids. Given the current state of some games in terms of modern systems, modern graphics etc, if we are to forget everything about the old games, are we realistically going to pick up any of the old games while there are so many modern games to play?
Valid question and it might be that the older games wouldn’t get played because of the graphics etc. I personally think that since everything started with the original 151 people would like to start from were it all started.
To be honest I feel the same. I think it’s more than just a factor: growing up, real life commitments, games that aren’t aged too well… and so on.
I collect and own several handhelds but, I can’t really play for more than 30-45 minutes especially without setting 2x-4x speed (and I don’t want).
So, to me it’s like having a good glass of wine and enjoying a little nostalgic trip and it’s ok this way. I’m not a gamer, and I prefer creating my little games and pixel art with GB studio. The idea of putting my art in an original console is what really intrigues me.
I still play emerald and omega ruby on emulators on my phone. I dont really get bored with them. Ill mix it up every time, a nuzlocke, or random themed teams.
I recently bought my son a GBC with pokemon blue so that we could play and trade, but what really changed up the dynamic is Nuzloking a playthrough. It brought a whole new level of fun to the gameplay.
Wouldn’t count it as one of the “old” games but I started playing SoulSilver for the first time a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it. Only have 2 gripes though:
Not being able to buy game corner coins is BS. I just want thunderbolt and ice beam ffs
The pervy old man outside the Celadon gym doesn’t make his “full of beautiful women” comment anymore.
There are only a few parts in each game id rather not deal with. The whole gamecorner and lake of rage rocket scenarios in crystal mostly. But i realized how easy it is to defeat most of the trainers with just typing and speed.
I used to feel this way, but I’ve found that a) treating the game as a relaxing activity (i.e. playing after a long work day, and/or before bed) and b) playing it in moderation makes the experience far more engaging.
I’m currently replaying Pearl in my downtime, devoting maybe 5-6 hours a week to it. I’m not bored or burnt out, and am always looking forward to the next quiet moment I can spare to play!
Over the last couple of months I’ve replayed HeartGold and Diamond (and did a first full playthrough of Black). The primary aim was to RNG legendary pokemon to get shinies, and I expected to be pretty bored. I was surprised how much I enjoyed gen 4; HeartGold especially was a lot of fun.
Diamond was more of a grind (maybe because BDSP/PLA didn’t come out too long ago), and Black was slightly harder to get into because I struggled to find pokemon I liked, but overall I enjoyed both. It’s possible learning and seeing RNG manipulation play out helped.
I think I’m done with story modes and I don’t build teams on cartridges anymore so I haven’t played through a game in a few years.
The last game I did was Diamond, I revisited White 2 some time before that. I used to run through Yellow every so often on the Stadium 2 Dodrio, the last time was maybe a year before Diamond.
I still play through generations 1 & 2 often. I recently completed a 3 year long journey of obtaining every available ribbon for my Houndoom named after my dog, Indiana. It required me to start with XD Gale of Darkness on the GC and move through generations 3-9 to get every ribbon. Most fun I’ve had playing Pokémon in a long time. People who say Pokémon games are easy have never attempted a 50 win streak in the RSE/DPP battle towers
