There’s a lot of rom hacks using old game engines. These can keep you interested because they’re essentially new games in old styles
I don’t really have the desire to go back and play older Pokémon (or even get to the E4 in the newer ones). Maybe I’m just tired of the formula. Or maybe I just spend too much time on Pokemon everyday already. Either way, I find way more enjoyment and nostalgia for other old N64/Gamecube games than I do for the mainline Pokemon ones
Yea it’s devastating to lose a mon that you invested so much in.

I wish I could. But I always feel like I should be doing something else. It’s strange because I love sitting on the couch and watching 4h of movies.
Perhaps I could try opening soul silver. That was fun.
Nah. I dont, but then again playing them is most of my online identity :\
One difference is that as a kid, you have all the time in the world to grind experience but you lack knowledge about battling, abilities, resistance/“effectiveness” perhaps. Personally my younger self would only use my favorite mons and used damage dealing moves only, didn’t care about having a well rounded team that counters all types or covers the weaknesses of my team.
As an adult I only play gens 1-6, whenever I have free time on weekends. Keeps me from getting bored from playing too much of one generation. I’d recommend every time you start a new game to have a different goal like maybe completing the pokedex or choose a different starter, catch pokemon you’ve never used before. This has led me to enjoy the games to their full capacity and dare I say I have more fun playing the games as an adult than as a kid. It’s important to have a goal, to strategize, and to experiment otherwise you’re just repeating the same playthrough over and over. Hope this helps and that you find enjoyment in the games once more.
For anyone who loves the old pre-Gen 6 Pokemon games but is bored replaying the same campaigns or wants a challenge, would highly recommend delving into Romhacks. You still get that nostalgia of playing a Pokemon game with the same engine, but with new regions, quality of life features and more.
Have a ton I can recommend if people are interested.
After revisiting Platinum, HGSS and BW2 with drayan0 mods, I got everything I wanted from playing older gen Pokémon
Nuzlocks makes it feel different . So does shiny hunting
Just did a play through of Blue version recently and absolutely had a blast.
As of recently, I finished Emerald and learned about the RNG manipulation you can do, which made the game 10000% more fun since you can get every single Pokémon Shiny.
I am the exact opposite, I absolutely love the older games (Gens 1 to 5). In the last few years I replayed basically every Gen at least once, while even completing several runs through some games (Gen 3 and HGSS). Currently I am trying to obtain every Gold symbol in the Emerald Battle Frontier (already 125 hours into it and it will go for far longer).
I usually play half an hour to and hour before going to bed, which helps me relax after a long day at work. On the weekends or while travelling I put more time into the games.
I can’t get into the new ones at all. I’ve been playing Emerald on an emulator and love it almost as much as I did when I was a kid.
I personally love the older games more than the newer games. Not too long ago I replayed HeartGold and had a blast. I’m about to start playing Omega Ruby and shiny hunt Treecko as my starter! I think it’s a mind thing for me as they take be back to my childhood.
I get more bored replaying the newer games because there is a lot more dialogue and general interruptions you have to sit through.
I go several years between playing the mainline games so no for me. It helps I mainly played older games once the HD generation came around so the Gameboy games don’t feel dated to me.
The exception would be the PTCG on Gameboy, it takes me so long to make a proper deck that I simply quit (lack of a story doesn’t help).
Im just messing around on this omega ruby file, combusken is kind of like the undecided 6th member. Idk i keep rotating my sixth but every time i play its always fun. Currently standing in front of sydney in the elite four.
I’m surprised that this thread went this hard. I didn’t expect a bunch of people to agree but I think y’all brought up good points in how to make it more fun like nuzlock or just using it to chill.
I think I’m going to try playing explorers of sky instead of soulsilver
I don’t play any roms or mods, but I’ve found that over time people have made all kinds of RNG discoveries in the original games, and I will endeavor to play with those when possible. For instance, starting HG/SS or DPP at a specific time on the game clock will cause all pokemon found with cute charm to have a 20% chance of being shiny. I’ve been documenting a playthrough like this on Youtube.
Also lets me experience some hilarious failures catching shinies without throwing my DS through a window!
