DHL package from japan missing

I hope everyone is doing well.

I ordered a package from a eBay seller in Japan. He shipped the item via DHL. I authorized the package for signature free delivery.

The problem is that the package was delivered on August 30th, but the DHL tracking didn’t post this until September 4th or 5th. So by the time I checked my complex’s mail room on that day, the package was nowhere to be found. So I have liability because I authorized a signature free delivery. However, the accurate tracking on which signature free delivery is predicated failed.

I am in a pickle. The seller needs to file the claim, per DHL policy. But I have am having trouble communicating that to the seller. Furthermore, I have asked twice but he has not answered if the package was insured or not. I think there is a language barrier between us. He has been amicable, but not helpful.

What would you guys do?

You’re toast. Tracking shows delivery so there is no insurance claim to be made regardless if the package was insured or not. Contacting someone at your complex’s mail department would be your best bet. And lesson learned keep signature - hopefully the lesson wasn’t too expensive
