Deck Variation Rant

Just a personal rant.

Im steadily chugging along on my English retail deck collection, feeling pretty good about it, been upgrading opened decks to sealed decks pretty regularly, been picking up some rarer collection boxes, its all good right?

No! I see someone post a “complete” deck collection on ebay with variants and I notice that theres a different variant on the fossil decks without damage counter stones shown on the box. Well, Id never seen that before but sure enough, about 1 of every 5-10 boxes on ebay are that variant, sure I can splurge a little and grab them now since the price is jumping. Alright, looking good now… but wait, I check the barcodes on a couple base 2 decks… drat! Theres a variation on the barcode number that I had assumed would be there but actually found more copies this time for all the decks in base 2.

I begin a more detailed search on alternate barcodes again and find that from Base starter deck to before Neo has a total of 75 individual decks with box variations that I know of so far (not including giftbox or deluxe collections), not just the 20 different decks. I have an assumption that on top of that, there are not 18 different decks for Neo to Sandstorm (all are still using the rectangle deck box style so i count them together), but theres a high chance of there being 26 or more individual deck boxes with variants. I havent even tried confirming how many ex series alternates there are yet but I know that at least 6 of the 14 sets have a variant box of each deck.

That puts total likely theme deck boxes with variations at least at 300 from base to the newest V Battle decks, not including any trainer kits, collections, battle arena decks, etc (about another 75 different products with decks at least, but forget getting all variations because many older collection boxes can have 1 to 6 different deck variations packaged).

I thought I was close to the finish line and now Im back down a couple dozen decks, still not including collection boxes that rarely ever show up. The unique weirdness to it is that it isnt new stuff that is hard to find, its all the old stuff that theres very little information about because nobody cared about it and theres no records why they made so many different boxes. And who knows if I even know of them all, it seems like theres constantly more coming out of the woodwork that I hadnt seen before.

The frustration of being close and then the goal moving further is real. Of course, its part of the card hunt and the collecting and I love my collections, but its so freaking annoying.

Once I have time, I’ll probably have to do a resource article showing all the different variations of everything, at least for the early sets.

Rant over.

Anyone else ever start a collection and then continue to find more and more that is part of it?

Oh yeah. This happened to me with Celebi. I thought, hey, it’s just Celebi, no gen 1 trophy cards, hardest to grab will be championship arena. But then… I found out about JP championship arena, then master key, then the design contest cards… then, what may be even worse, in the last week I found out about the unlimited L3 variant of indigo plateau, which is absolutely gonna be a b*tch to find in reverse, I think @quuador has been looking for a pikachu unlimited reverse from the set for years…

He needs unlimited

Dang, my fault. Searched Mercari and a handful of Japanese card shops to no avail. Sorry for hijacking thread. I’ll ping if I find anything

Hi,

Since we are talking about deck variants I thought I could ask here if anyone knows if this zap Theme Deck I got in the mail today is real or a reseal. As you can see from the photos ( imgur.com/a/xXjiThk ) the shrink wrap is like that of a booster box. I have seen a Base set - 2 player theme deck with the same wrap before, however I wasn’t really convinced. I don’t have much knowledge of WotC theme decks at all so that is why I am asking.

appreciate everyone’s time in advance

Pretty sure that’s shadowless

Its not standard factory sealing for them, not sure if later prints were sealed this way since I have seen some for sale but havent seen openings for this sealing type. Just for information, its doubtful it is a shadowless version because decks numbered 6058 are usually the ones with a chance at shadowless, not 6018. Best of luck though.

Thanks @lyleberr , and @kingboo64 , for your responses. Seems like there are just too many variants ! I don’t even collect theme decks and I have already had enough… not sure if I should have mentioned this before but the deck is on the top half. Regardless I think I will keep it sealed for the time being.

Thanks again

If it’s on the top I’m 90% sure that’s a shadowless

It’s legit. I opened one back in June just like that, and it was shadowless.

Just realized I never came back to that post for the big reveal. Spoiler alert!

I know what you mean @lyleberr, it can definitely be a bit relentless but I think this is one of my favourite things about collecting. Learning about all the variations and the history behind them, especially when so much of the info about variant release is still unknown or unclear in a lot of cases.

@kingboo64, Unlim L3 are for sure slippery but I find they’ll still appear semi-reg on Mercari/Yahoo A if you keep a regular eye out for them. I’m still looking for a couple of reverse stadiums from unlim L2 myself, but luckily found the L3 Plateaus :slightly_smiling_face:

Ended up opening the deck ! Appreciate the input @lyleberr , @kingboo64 , @trainerdlyellow , it ended up shadowless (imgur.com/a/a24GDqK). Not sure what I will do with the cards since I only really collect sealed, but good to know it wasn’t tampered with, just potentially resealed.

@jrugenious212, Thats great to hear, congrats. I’ll have to keep looking around on why theres different barcodes then. Was everything sealed on the inside as well?

@lyleberr , Yes everything was sealed inside, both the deck and damage counters, here is a photo of the other contents imgur.com/a/a24GDqK
