All of Pennsylvania schools are suppose to be shut down for 10 days. Local events have been cancelled.
For my job, some stores such as Dollar Trees, Dollar General, Target, Rite Rid Pharmacy, and others have cancelled their scheduled inventories. While others still plan on having their scheduled inventories. But my workplace are trying to balance the remaining work schedule among employees in order to minimize the impact of lost work.
And yep toilet paper has been selling out here as well. Dollar Tree is the only place so far that I’ve seen sell out of hand soap and cough medicine.
Bi-partisan can mean only 1 out of a hundred dissents. If that’s the bill I read about it totally sucks and is packed with pork and totally politicizes this tragic pandemic.
I work in the healthcare field. Specifically a Respiratory Therapist. I will be in the literal front line of these patients coming into the ER and ICU… we are even the people who intubate people. (Put “the tube” and life support on/off). What I’m beginning to see on social media is starting to make me lose hope that general populations of people will not calm down for quite some time.
I’m sure everyone else’s feed is flooded with it. What makes it worse for healthcare workers is that there no chance of working from home and we will be most at risk. The Facebook warriors seem to be the type who do have that privilege and will in no way be in contact with a sick person unless they go out willingly. It really bugs us that these people eat up our healthcare supplies also.
Stay calm people! If you are one of the people adding to the conversation, that’s ok, just be considerate to how you are contributing to the big picture. The dominos are a little thin.
Discussing relief packages that have been passed by governments is fine. Discussing the benefits and drawbacks of these relief packages is fine. Connecting them to an overarching political position is not.
OK: “Now that the President has approved, looks like a bill will be passed that guarantees free testing for all. Sounds great!” or “Looks like there will be assistance for hourly workers and small businesses. But what about gig workers?”
NOT OK: “The dumb Democrats are politicizing this virus to take down the President!” or “The President is such an incompetent buffoon that half of America will be infected!”
Thanks! It means a lot. Hoping for warmer weather before it really takes off. Here in Missouri it hasn’t had the full surge yet, but it’s creeping in. We will be doing our best!
I think the current bill is a step in the right direction. I used bipartisan because Pelosi and POTUS are working on it together. Public health is an excellent investment.
True, but did you see what she was trying to slip in as permanent, unrelated law? That happens but she shouldn’t use a disaster like this and politicize it.
This is all pretty crazy. My wife is a public high school teacher in a large city, and they just cancelled classes for several weeks. It’s tough because the district is enormous and has plenty of low-income and homeless kids who count on school and sports as a way to get away from rough personal lives and to get meals. I understand it’s necessary, but it’s really sad…
I’m fortunate enough to work for a fully remote company and not have children, but coronavirus is taking its toll on some of my colleagues as their kids have been forced to stay home and they’re having to share desks with their partners who would otherwise usually work in an office.
I think the UK government could be doing more, but at the same rate a lot of the news at the moment is nothing more than scaremongering. A local newspaper reported that one of the larger supermarkets in the area had sold out of pet food, and the knock on effect of that is that all other stores have since been cleared of pet food by people panic buying.
With any luck it’ll pass quickly with minimal damage. I certainly hope nobody here gets caught up in it.
A good resource which hasn’t been shared here yet is the Flatten The Curve website: www.flattenthecurve.com.
People have gone crazy here about it as super markets are out of toilet paper, pasta, noodles and tomato sauce. And obviously hand sanitizer. It feels like people are preparing for an apocalypse, even though the percentage of the people who actually have it in the whole country is 0,004% atm…
I work at the city hall in my city and we don’t have any kind of restrictions in place for our office other than stay home if you are getting flu symptoms. The only restriction so far from the mayor is that if you work in health care or with children (such as teachers) and you come home from abroad, you gotta stay home for a week before coming to work no matter if you show any symptoms or not. Oh and no handshaking or hugging anyone at work.
Even if a case would be found at the city hall there are no plans closing the city hall… But in that case people could work from home if they have the possibility to do so. I never take my work laptop home though and I don’t have a VPN so I couldn’t access everything I essentially need in my work daily. Everyone would need a VPN installed to their work laptops and right now it’s only a selected few who have it. But I expect everything to stay fine around here.
Quick timeline/summary of what happened here in The Netherlands thus far regarding the virus:
Feb. 20th: The virus arrived in The Netherlands, with the first infected being a 56-yo man living in the province Noord-Brabant (southern province of The Netherlands)
March 6th: The first death caused by the virus in The Netherlands, a 86-yo man that was hospitalized five days prior due to urine issues. Later when he also got breathing issues, he was tested positive for the Corana virus. He died three days later on March 6th.
At March 1st there were roughly 100 infected (no source, just from memory), mostly in Noord-Brabant
Yesterday there were 804 known infected, with 10 deaths thus far in The Netherlands, and roughly 150 new infected were added on average each day this past week.
Right now almost everything gets cancelled or closed. Schools in Noord-Brabant are all closed; interchanging sport events (competitions, tournaments, etc.) are all cancelled; sport clubs decide for themselves where they stay open or not; I received a message from my management at work that everyone who can work from home should; the Efteling (one of the most well-known theme parks in The Netherlands) is closed since today; etc. etc. Every event that would have more than 100 people are cancelled.
Also, no one is shaking hands, hugging, or kissing anymore. Funny thing though: some people are using their elbows to ‘shake hands’, even though we have to sneeze/cough in the back of our elbow, haha.
For anyone who is Dutch, here a list of Q&A from the RIVM (Dutch Health and Environment Department). The English translated list is lacking halve of it…
Note that this is just an objective summary of what happened within my country regarding the virus. Of course countries like China, Italy and South-Korea are hit a lot harder. And it’s mainly older people or those already in bad health that have to worry. For most others of us it’s a worst case of the flu. It just spreads a lot easier than the flu, and it’s easier to die from it (~2% death count from the Corona virus vs 0.01% from the flu).
I guess it’s all closer to our beds and all over the news, now that it’s a virus in the richer parts of the world. As mentioned earlier, more people still die every day because of car accidents, and I don’t even want to know the death per day count of those who die from hunger/thirst/diseases/war in poor countries we almost hear nothing about, except for a small article somewhere near the end of the new’s paper…
Anyway, given the rate it spreads, and the minor things done thus far to prevent further spreading, I wouldn’t be surprised if 40%+ of the entire world population is infected within a few years.
Luckily it’s just a (deadlier) flu virus here. Just imagine how the world would have looked like if this virus would cause 90% deaths among the infected and would spread just as fast… Actually don’t imagine it, since it would be chaos and anarchy for sure…
PS: If anyone wants to buy special edition ungraded toilet paper, I sell them for 100 bucks a roll. Sealed in a 10-pack would be 2.5k. PM if interested. /s
