Could you afford your collection today?

In your collection are there any cards you wouldn’t be able to afford at today’s prices?

Edit: No as in there’s nothing that I couldn’t afford today that I already own

There are probably a few cards that I would have trouble replacing immediately. I certainly couldn’t buy it all back again at today’s prices. A couple cards would be irreplaceable just because of their rarity so in that sense I couldn’t afford to lose them.

Umm… well… I’m broke as shit from this hobby so ya there’s quite a few that’d take a year or so each to save up for

Singles? Some of my gems would hurt, but I could manage. Lump sum payment for my entire collection? That is something I cannot do, and the thought of it makes me shake in fear.

Nope, a couple hundred dollars is a large purchase for me, so the fact that some of my more expensive items are now in the thousands means i wouldn’t be able to buy them at todays prices

Just starting the hobby this past year and I know for a fact that I wouldn’t repurchase the cards I bought if I had to start again. Prices have literally doubled and tripled on my top 3 cards.

I’ve got a pretty replaceable collection. Only one graded Magneton that’s cheap, and a couple binders of sets I’m trying to complete. I think my most expensive card is a Base Unlimited Charizard that’s in ok shape.

haha, same. nothing special in my collection- don’t even have any graded cards yet. only things that could maybe get a little pricy are some of my cards from base set, probably most of all the FE shadowless zapdos that’s in /decent/ shape.
my collection is definitely sub-1k, and while i could repurchase it, i doubt i’d buy them all back. might focus on different areas instead of going for first generation holos.

I was never at a point I could afford my entire collection in one sitting. The thing about collecting is most people amass their collections over time. So, in a way this is a loaded question.

The real question is could you start over and end in the same spot in the same amount of time? It’d be interesting to hear those results as most people would have higher incomes in the beginning, but have to pay higher prices. For me there would also be a better understanding of how the market works and less ‘bad’ purchases on my end. There’s also individual items I wouldn’t be able to get just due to personal reservations on what I’m willing to pay not being enough money.

Absolutely not; PSA 9 1st Ed Base Charizard, 23/27 Gold Stars in PSA 10 (Ray and Charizard in included), only complete Call of Legends SL Shining PSA 10 set in the world, among a bunch of other PSA 10s…this would all be above and beyond what I could spend at this point in my life (especially having just bought a house). I’m actually trying to figure out how much longer I can hold onto everything since adulting is requiring more and more money lately… :stuck_out_tongue:

I usually can’t afford my cards at the time I purchase them but I buy them anyway.

My PSA 9 1st edition starter holos cost more than what I make in a year at my part time job alone LOL

Well, I bought all my Pikachus, Sevipers, Mimikyus, and about 8,000 other cards in the past 2.5 years, and the other 2,000 I already had in the past. Only the Pikachus really contain any rare cards, so although I would be bankrupt, I am able to repurchase my entire Pokémon collection right now. Which is actually not too shabby, since I usually overpay for Pikachus to begin with…

I’m glad however that I don’t have to. If I spend money on cards over time and it already seems quite high, I don’t even want to know what I’ve spend in total or would have to spend again in one go if I would buy my entire collection now. Probably at least 15,000 USD, possibly even about 25,000 USD… And then I also got tens of thousands worth of puzzles and Yu-Gi-Oh cards…
