TBH Shadowless is underrated af. The color differences/lack of a shadow is really what makes that base set variant look amazing. The first edition stamp is just that, a stamp lol (I have a bunch of 1st ed holos too just for variety pls donât come for me head)
Agreed, shadowless definitely underrated and undervalued at the moment. Definitely a cooler look than unlimited versions and does anybody know its true rarity in comparison to 1st edition cards??
Theres videos on youtube of them being pulled from sealed boxes. Nothing shady about them. Ghost stamps are completely different - they are unique to the Pikachus found in Zap theme decks.
People have been saying this about Shadowless for years. The thing is, Shadowless cards do sell for good amount, far higher than Unlimited. But at the end of the day theyâre never going to sell for close to what 1st editions sell for, thereâs simply too much allure that goes with being labeled as 1st edition. You donât even need to know anything about Pokemon to understand the inherent appeal of cards from the original set that were given the label of â1st edition.â So I canât really agree that Shadowless cards are âundervaluedâ compared to 1st editions even if they were both part of the very first print run.
I agree Shadowless cards are awesome though, they look much better than Unlimited IMO and you get cards that came from the very first print run. Itâs a nice compromise of something that is a lot more special than Unlimited but still affordable compared to 1st edition.
I donât know the true population of Shadowless cards compared to 1st editions but I do know that the PSA population report is likely to be misleading in this regard.
Anecdotally, I owned a whole bunch of Shadowless cards as a kid (even more than I did Unlimited Base) but I never owned a single 1st edition card as a child. From what Iâve heard, this may be at least in part about where I lived (which was New York City for me).
Shadowless cards were graded as Unlimited before PSA recognized the Shadowless variant. They are hidden in the Unlimited pop report. There are likely more than 53 PSA 10 Charizards, for example, but nobody knows how many.
I like the way Scott puts it, to paraphrase: âShadowless is right where it should beâ. I also think they are awesome, but to think they will catch up with 1st edition is, in my opinion, a fallacy. Everyone knows what first edition means. Coming from a background of collecting records, itâs akin to an âoriginal pressingâ.
@enlightenedbulbasaur I agree with you that theyâre not undervalued, but I think theyâre underrated in the sense that some people view base 1st as must have and gloss over shadowless when itâs just a tad less appealing(while being much more appealing than unlimited)
I donât want to hijack this thread so Iâll make a new one showing I was paying attention to thick thin years before anybody even noticed. I put a very interesting decade old inventory sheet there.
Little incentive to do that just to fix the label. When it comes time to sell just list it as a shadowless card and it will have no problem selling. Itâs not like you canât see what card is actually in the slab.
Oh, Iâm VERY well aware of that. I remember you being the only person on eBay who was even bothering to mention thick and thin stamps on eBay when I first started getting into it all the way back in 2009.
Ehhh, yes and no. My best guess from what Iâve seen is that a Shadowless Charizard in an Unlimited slab would sell for much closer to the price of a typical Shadowless card, but it would probably be at least a little bit discounted.
I remember a recently a PSA 10 1st edition holo Aerodactyl was mislabeled as being a non-holo and it sold for probably only about 65% of what the card would typically sell for had it not been mislabeled.
