On the CGC site they say that you can set a minimum grade for the card (as you can do at PSA/BGS) but that if it does not meet that grade, it will get an Authentic (AU) “designation”.
I assume “designation” means it will still be slabbed?
I assume this means that if you set min grade as a 9, and it gets an 8, they will just slab it as “AU” - or does that mean they wont slab it?
The Pika wont 9, I just want it as AU, but there was no other way of putting both cards in the same submission (Zard will 9-10 grade) - so I put min grade as a 9.
Basically I want to know if they still slab cards that don’t hit the min grade (I purposely put the min grade high as I want pika as AU) but want my zard in the same sub to get a grade.
You are correct. I had the same question for them a few months back after JSA launched and they emailed me the following:
Thank you for contacting us! Yes, that is correct! When submitting a card that has a signature, you can choose the grade the overall grade you would like the card to receive and if it does not receive the minimum grade requested, then it will be deemed Authentic (AU) only instead of receiving the numerical grade.
What is the difference between JSA and Signature series? I’ve been sitting on a bunch of signed cards from when Alec was kind enough to give us a season of regionals with artist signings and just assumed they’d never be able to get graded after PSA had to fire their lead guy and started returning a ton of people’s sigs as unverifiable. I knew CGC had a signature series if they were witnessed in person but I didn’t know you could send your signed cards in again
Yep signature series is witnessed, standard JSA is for unwitnessed. The labels are slightly different but they will slab and authenticate your old autos
Signature series is the in there presence witnessed Signature. They watched it get signed. Psa and beckett offer ITP in there presence signings aometimes as well.
Jsa authentication is like psa where they will just authenticate the autograph the same way psa does so its still an opinion at the end of the day vs 100% with Signature series
Yeah I’m not questioning the actual authenticity of the autos but… consider the ones where it’s cut off at the edge. It could be just a weird fluke where the marker was lifted up right at the edge. But I think it’s important to note that this happened on multiple cards and no copy has the ink touching the cardstock mount. These were also the first major pieces of evidence the cards were potentially fake, brought up before my post on the dot pattern. So they independently caused people concern.
If we consider the possibility that an uncut beta page was signed, it explains the phenomenon. But then it raises questions. Was the autograph witnessed on an uncut sheet - then the cgc witness knew the cards were assembled? Or was it even witnessed at all? If there was no employee present during the signing then it fundamentally compromises any trust I’d put into the service.
I don’t know claim to know what happened but in my opinion it’s highly concerning.
It really depends on who you ask to get a certain answer. I had a few BGS 9.5s I wanted to get crossed over to CGC bc they make them CGC 10s. The rep told me they only take BGS as raw cards and PSA only for slab crossover. Which clearly isn’t true as they do BGS and psa. I think sgc as well. Waited 10 mins, called back different rep said the correct answer.
I had heard with CGC you can’t set a min grade that has above the one you’re submitting.
Which is an odd place now to be as a BGS 9.5 owner.
If I ever wanted to cross my BGS 9.5s to CGC 10, sending them in the slabs, I’m curious if they would still crack them out of they got CGC 9.5s which would be a downgrade.
Won’t be doing it, but yeah - funny how they don’t all know how they operate.
They wouldn’t do that. The rep told me that BGS 9.5s are treated the same way as old blue label CGC 9.5s. The new 9.5mint+ on CGC is sub grades of 2x9 and 2x9.5. They wouldn’t give it the CGC 9.5 bc it would be a downgrade. The crossover is same grade or better. A gem mint to CGC is a 10. I wonder if you sent them a BGS 9 slab with subs of 9/9/9.5/9.5 if they’d convert it to a CGC 9.5 mint+.
