CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

Idk, if this thread is a microcosmos for the collector’s community, the love-hate ratio for the old label was 50:50, while the love-hate ratio for the new label is…50:50. Congratulations CGC, splendid progress.

I know Im in the very small minority but as someone who liked the blue label since the beginning, has no loyalty to psa or bgs, liked the simplicity of the old design, has been a supporter of cgc slabs, this change puts me off of cgc grading completely. I liked the slight blue tint of their cases and that the label matched it. This new one just makes it look busy and uninteresting. Its black and white and looks generic.

They raised prices of subgrades killed the subgrades, when they premiered they were an additional $5 but gave information that was worth it.

This change has killed the visual look of their slabs for me. Ive been waiting to send a large stack of cards but now Im not interested at all. For my collecting purposes I have 0 interest in continuing supporting cgc going forward.

What I’ve realized is that people just really enjoy complaining about CGC. I don’t think there’s a single decision they could make that wouldn’t result in hyper-scrutiny from this community. Which is not surprising, tbh. After all, this a forum filled to the brim with people with six and seven-figure PSA collections lol. Nothing wrong with that, and people should criticize CGC as much as they want to. It’s just a reality.

I feel exactly the same, I wasn’t a huge fan of the cases before but now it’s not even an option I’d consider.

The slab and label change was my prediction, I was hoping they would just make the label a bit better and the cases a bit less bulky. Now altering the grading scale and not offering sub grades really kills it for me. BGS it is!

I’m one of the few people why really liked their original blue label without the white gradient and their original cases, and really like subgrades. It’s incredibly frustrating. And I’m someone who objectively “benefits” from how many 9.5s I have including high-end cards. For now I don’t think I’ll bother sending in my No. 1 Trainer with Chansey art and Creatures Deck Chansey to get the 10 bump. Cause if I do, I’ll be sending in my whole a graded Chansey collection. And then what if they change the label again a few years from now? :sob:

Come on you know that isn’t what’s happening. The post above you’re is someone saying they only graded with cgc. You also have @qwachansey who has graded 6 figures with cgc. Overall this has been a pretty healthy discussion.

Even discounting the label change. No subgrades, downgrading perfects to pristines. Inb4 the suck back to old scale.

Dude take the 10s and run. When will a grading company ever give you free 5 figures. This isn’t the pwcc non-loyalty program here

It’s been a very healthy and civil discussion. But I stand by the statement that peoples’ dislike of CGC on this forum is, in many instances, very directly informed by having a vested interest in CGC failing. I’m not saying this is true of you, but that it’s true of many people.

It does often feel like a PSA circle jerk here I must admit…

On a forum where cgc isn’t particularly liked it’s huge. Even my brother who has never used them likes them. He’s psa and bgs only.

Tbf cgc has chosen to be more controversial. You don’t have the same reactions with bgs, sgc or anyone else because they aren’t making the same aggressive moves.

These are just examples that come to mind: Completely overhauling their grading scale & label 3 years in. Changing their scale prior and not acknowledging it. Grading cards from sheets. Grading inked cards. Not to mention, the astroturfing. Cgc isn’t some babe in the woods people are attacking because they own psa cards. These are just moves that will warrant more of a reaction.

I actually liked both the visual look and the hand feel of their slabs. But this… is unfortunate for collectors who arent trying to flip every card. I buy graded to get cards in confirmed condition but if i never want to crack them at least they have a clean look in my pokemon collection where cards arent always bordered with white like most sport cards, now a generic look and change of standards just tells me that their grading is only for “investment” interest. No thanks, not for me.

:joy: I literally spit out my drink. Touché

Many people here did use CGC. Many of them got burnt too. The forum is a reflection of the hobby at large - most people don’t use CGC today - hence they felt the need to change.

The “vested interest” argument strikes both ways. By that logic no one that owns a single PSA or CGC card has a valid opinion on either company.

PSA collectors don’t have a vested interest in CGC failing. PSA and CGC grades could be identical in price and it hurts no one. The argument has always struck me as strange. People don’t “defend” PSA or CGC because they have a stake, they have a stake because they prefer that company. The causal line is in the opposite direction.

Better start copyrighting your posts, pal! Coming up with original material is hard these days so ya never know when a stagecoach quote might crop up!

I agree with you on the refusal to acknowledge the grading scale change. That was a big fuck up on CGC’s part and I think it was very lame of them to not acknowledge it. I think the anger re: that was largely justified.

I can very much understand your frustration with the astroturfing thing, but I also haven’t seen a shred of evidence that CGC directed it. So I think it’s a bit unfair to blame CGC for it. But the individuals who did it should absolutely be blamed + banned from the forum permanently; no question there.

The grading of inked cards feels like a total non-issue to me, personally. They explicitly state on the label that the card is inked. I dislike inked cards as much as anyone else, but I really don’t see the issue with grading inked cards as long as the case makes clear that the card is altered.
