CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

I think that is a fair number considering how overall less data there is on cgc vs psa. I however think there is an upward bias potential with cgc as they have more “definition” in the 9-10 range allowing customers to feel more confident in buying their grades. Whereas a psa 10 can be anywhere from a 8-10 depending on the whims of the grader since they started grading cards, we have a more refined cgc 10 system that gives a buyer a better sense of ease for the gem mint 10. So you get demand from both normal timmys and bobs looking only for a 10 (no nitpicking or regrading on their mind) as well as the novices who know enough about psa to not risk buying an 8 in 10 clothing or may want a “true 10” with high confidence for ease of investment purposes.

Then again, psa 10 may have a slight premium on their 10s simply due to how archaic their grading is. Presumably, there are some bgs 10/blacks mixed in with those 8s. It’s too messy to really know what the “psa 10 average” should really be, especially assuming not all the strong psa 10s haven’t already been picked through and hoarded by some of the more eagle eyed investors on here and elseware.

The primary thing holding back a cgc 10 is that the Pristine grade exists. Same reason a 9.5 was held back, there were 2 grades higher

As long as cgc can equate a cgc pristine 10 to a bgs 10, I don’t think anyone will have an issue. Cgc 10 = psa 10 = bgs 9.5ish (bgs getting that “not 10” problem).

cgc 10 pristine = bgs 10 at the top for 99% of investors

Per 10 cgc = black 10 bgs for the degen nerds who care about mythical perfection

Cgc has consistently had an issue where their 9.5s were valued below PSA 10 and their Premium grades were valued below BGS. I think that’s the primary motivation behind this change.

I don’t know if this will change the dynamic enough though. A CGC Gem Mint is not the “highest grade” where a PSA 10 is. A CGC Pristine 10 will not be as highly coveted as a black label either. Overall I think the change will benefit CGC but I think the same pricing dynamics are fundamental to trying to be both PSA and BGS at the same time

I’m going to try an experiment. I’m taking one of my cleanest psa 9s and seeing if I can get the cgc 9.5 before the switch. If it comes back as a cgc 9 I will have lost money and yes I’ll be mad about it lol

Centering is great. back has zero whitening. The flaws are pictured. 3 tiny print lines on Charizard’s wing and a tiny dirt spot on back (I’m not entirely sure if on card). Holo has no scratches otherwise. Pics are zoomed in pretty far through loupe. Let’s play the game

Wipe it off to see if the spot is dirt or not. No reason to keep it there in the card if you’re going to grade it.

That said CGC is going to be pretty hard on any surface issues not print related.

Wow, ultra zoom! Is this from a special piece of equipment?

Is it this card? Nice.

Surface things like that can also be noticed pretty easily with UV light.

That’s usually my go to because it also makes edges and corners easy to get a read on.

I’m gonna run it under UV tomorrow as well, let’s see what else pops up

I will supply all the 3 averages. Mean, median and mode. It’s looking very interesting currently.

I am assuming the 100% lower (aka free) meme option will be omitted?

Yes that one is free. There’s 2 that have gone 100 percent the other way. I’m surprised it’s as close as it is. The mean was only 3-4 percent less than a psa 10 when I added up.

I highly recommend not shipping to CGC with USPS right now. Use FedEx so it doesn’t collect dust in their PO Box

I also learned just recently that USPS is slow as hell right now due to the “International Suspension of Delivery Guaranteed Timeframes from USPS”, at least that’s what i was told. My package is just being moved from facility to another, extremely frustrating.

Poll results in.

The question.

Where should the average price of a cgc 10 gem mint be compared to a psa 10 gem mint?

Over 50 votes has now been reached. This is based on 54 votes.

Mean.

A cgc 10 gem mint has a value of 92.78% of a psa 10 gem mint.

Median.

A cgc 10 gem mint has a value of 10% lower than a psa 10 gem mint.

Mode.

A cgc 10 gem mint has the same value as a psa 10 gem mint.

A very interesting result. A cgc 10 gem mint being between 10 percent lower and the same value as a psa 10 gem mint.
