CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

True, and now when I think about it a bit more clearly it seems to me now the scale is basically going to be like SGC instead of PSA or BGS. They also have a 10 Gem Mint and Pristine grade, but no Perfect/Black Label and they also have the 9 and 9.5 Mint grades.

I honestly forgot that CSG even existed until this thread came up, so maybe CGC has a plan to try and compete across TCGs and Sports under a more uniform system (CGS + CGC)? Guessing that’s the other motive, outside of the financial aspects.

At this point, seems like it was a high schooler who created their business plan in the first place.

From the label design, to the split of CGC and CSG was a huge mistake. Should of all be under one umbrella from the get go.

Are you saying that a corporation is making a decision based on profit? Doubtful. If they were, that would be a shocking development and pretty damning evidence that CGC is a horrible entity worthy only of disdain.

Unlike PSA, of course, whose decisions are only made with the greater good of humanity in mind.

It’s all in one now, just like PSA. And they should be accepting nearly all cards, including ones they didn’t before. One shipping fee, one handling fee, uniform labels etc

Next thing you’ll be hearing is they would like to grow their business. I’m outta here if they do.

Right, I was ignorant and didn’t even click on the original article when this thread was made. Well at least it sort of ties it all together a bit nicer. It’ll be interesting to see how things settle. Honestly the small amount of CGC slabs I have I may try and re-holder to a 10 Gem Mint because I had no real intentions of re-sale and it would be a bit more satisfying to see 10 instead of 9.5 on the labels overall. No idea if it’ll impact re-sale value, seems a bit speculative for now.

This pretty much sums up how I feel: incomprehensible. I’ve been a fan of CGC for a long time and have contributed to fixing the population report on their forums and making it more accurate. I was always a fan of subgrades and even when they raised the prices I understood (though I of course didn’t want to pay more). For better or for worse I’ve pretty much been a supporter since they came out and now that they do this I just feel betrayed. It doesn’t hurt them at all to keep subgrades, that’s why people had to pay more for them. What a shitty spot I’m in, and all of the other subgrade collectors. Couldn’t care less about the label color, that’s the least insulting thing they changed today. :sob:

Did you see the live feed? It’s not just about not many using them it’s about how inconsistent they are. Pretty much what we’ve all learned here.

I guess I should have said desperate to avoid the dog pile.

All companies are in competition with each other. Psa didn’t start doing these new errors for no reason. In the past they’ve been taking stuff off not putting it on. It’s good they all battle for us.

Sure, I never said I don’t want competitors to exist. I thought cgc was doing fine. This whole thing is just feels desperate and out of nowhere.

I’m not interested in a video from company representatives who say “don’t quote me”

It might be desperate, but it’s the right decision, IMO. It’s basically what I’ve been advocating they do for the past 3 years on this forum lol. If it took desperation for them to make the right decision, then I’m quite happy they’re desperate.

Hell, if they had made this decision 2.5 years ago I don’t think they would’ve become desperate in the first place. Frankly, it’s pathetic how long it took them to make this decision.

Sure, it just feels like a slap in the face for anyone who graded prior. Also I don’t know how someone can ascertain value to a number on a label that can just shift.

Honestly that’s the biggest thing. I personally have zero CGC cards and never plan to own one. It’s all about how they have screwed their customers so incredibly bad.

If you sent in a card when they first launched you got a 8.5 if you regraded after their standards changed it was a 9.5 so now that’s two grading fees. Now go ahead and send it back in to get the 10 but not the 10 10 it’s the lesser 10. And if you had a perfect black label card don’t worry it’s now a CGC 10 10 not the tripple 10 perfect :joy: and go ahead and slide us another $5 plus shipping both ways and go ahead and wait for your pumiling!

As one such person, it doesn’t feel like a slap on the face to me. It feels like a company making a decision that they should’ve made a long time ago. The only thing pathetic about the decision, as I see it, is how long it took them to make it.

But I think I’ve made myself very clear at this point. I see where you and others are coming from. Just trying to provide a refrain of satisfaction among the overwhelming negativity in this thread (most of it from people who don’t even collect CGC in the first place).

this invalidates your presumed sentiment… I understand you may feel a certain way, but with nothing invested, just know it is speculation and does not represent how the majority of people who actually have cgc cards feel.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts! Same for others as well who have graded with them prior!

after waking up from my nap, the only thing i’m not happy about is the pristine label looking a bit tacky. everything else is fine.

tbf i didn’t like that the old pristine/perfect labels had the different color number either
