CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

IG live feed just ended. Hopefully you can all watch it somehow soon. Professional and friendly learnt a lot. Impressed me. Pricing changes hinted aswell lots in the works looks good.

ā€œWhat’s the cert on that gem mint 10?ā€

I literally just bought my first ever CGC 9.5 too
Easy peasy

bro they didnt answer anyones questions and it felt like the whole thing was prerecorded

the dumbest thing about all of this is they should have just said

ā€œall 9.5s are now mint+, pristine 10s are now gem mint 10s, and perfect 10s are now pristine 10sā€

they had no reason to bump all 9.5s up to 10s instead of just saying ā€œthe word next to the number is changingā€

If they did this, their 10s would have inherent value like their pristine 10s do (only one subgrade off of perfection). now it just feels like psa, where a gem mint 10 isnt necessarily that great of a copy of the card.

They already have enough room even with subgrades though :frowning:

As @dyl said, the new label looks like a basement grading company. I’m not one to dump all over CGC but they aren’t helping themselves in the market.

You can’t answer every question lol. A lot of what I wanted to know they actually covered. What did you want to know?

This is a bad move. The market will reject the premium knowing all 9.5s will be converted and the population will be diluted. This just proves that certain aspects of grading are 100% psychological and those premiums aren’t always worth it. I really hope when people buy graded cards they are buying the card and not the grade. (For example: Not all PSA 7s are equal).

I’m just trying to understand, why are they upgrading some 9.5’s but also keeping the 9.5 grade?

There’s no dilution. Gem mint remains gem mint. Psychology is why they’ve changed 9.5 to 10.

Betting on the rational market is a losing battle unfortunately

They covered it in the live in length. Several reasons that all made sense. If you listen to how they say it all it’s much better than a shortened version from me.

???.. 10s are being diluted with 9.5s

the million dollar question. And why keep the half grades. Get rid of them all together.

9.5 was previously their version of gem mint. So the gem mints remain gem mint but with 10 in the new scale just like how psa calls 10 gem mint. The newly graded 9.5s are mint+. It may sound stupid that way (and certainly confusing) but nothing has changed in the actual grading, just the number

There was a moment in that live video where the guy said ā€œdon’t quote meā€ and then said that CGC 9s with certain subgrades will/would become 9.5s

Pretty much what @pokecollectoramy is saying.

Doesn’t this just shaft anyone who had a 10 prior to this change?
