Blast From The Past: Prices How They Used To Be

Thought it would be fun to see how prices used to be. I went into my esnipe archives and brought up the below.

If you have other examples post them here. I’ll add some periodically.

WARNING: This is going to make you sick so proceed with caution;)

U.S. Inflation Rate, 2006-2017 ($100)
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the dollar experienced an average inflation rate of 1.78% per year. Prices in 2017 are 21.4% higher than prices in 2006.

In other words, $100 in the year 2006 is equivalent to $121.42 in 2017, a difference of $21.42 over 11 years.

Still though those are amazing prices! ;__;

I remember just getting back into the hobby in 2010 or so. One of the first things I bought was 20 Fossil packs for $2.50 each! I wish I had stockpiled them back then but I had fun opening them. Got 3 holo Dragonites

Ugh I remember the guys doing this back in elementary school. And soon after that Pokemon cards were banned from school in general. Me even as a 8 year old thought it was stupid to throw cards and I never took my cards to school personally, I didn’t want to damage them.

Also I guess it helps my mom worked for a company which made binders and binder pages so I always had protection for my cards  Slightly off topic in general, but I’ve never had to buy any binder pages until this day because my mom kept a stock of “bad quality” pages from those times. They would’ve been thrown away otherwise, they had small manufacturing problems like the edges of bottom left corner being too weak so if you enter a card too sideways it can break the pocket. Nothing else wrong with them

Crazy. lol

I think I heard Scott saying he used to struggle selling PSA 9s for $250 or so. It looks like Pokemon was ‘dead’ for quite a few years. I remember checking ebay listings once in a while and wondered why cards were selling at same price(or less) as in 2000.

I only wish I came back to the hobby even 1 year ago. Hell, just 3-4 months ago a lot of cards were half price. D:

You have too many Charizards mate, and that’s not where the cash is. I’ll trade you all my Magikarp’s for them worthless Charizard’s!

If you enjoy pain you should check out these listings from 2000/2001 :stuck_out_tongue:

Man, even a year ago and I could have picked up the main cards on my checklist and come out with more money left over than I currently have while still needing the big 2.

It seems insane to me that the English Gold Star Umbreon and Espeon literally doubled in price in a year, while more were being pulled and graded. The POP5 packs have also gone from $25 to $50 on auction.

Mercy, please.

And think, we’ll probably say the same thing in a few years time, “remember back in 2017 when PSA 10 1st ed. charizards were $20K? Those were the days!”

I paid $200 for my first psa 9 1st ed charizard and that was considered too much at the time. And maybe $35 for my first chamsey.
Oh how the times have changed

And there I was, in 2007, not buying a 1st edition base box because $1000 was too expensive

Not getting back into Pokemon sooner and Bitcoin are my two biggest regrets
