Pokemon Prices: Flash from the Past

The two below listings I won back in 2002 on USA Yahoo Auctions (now defunct). Both ended up grading PSA 10 and yes, I still have them;)
The seller, whirlwind102, you all know and is still selling Pokemon lol.

Holy damn, reminds me when I purchased my 1st Edition Crystal Charizard for $25 1+ year ago, lol.

I also heard people overpaid for certain cards back in the day like the “Grand Party” promo which was though to be extremely rare.

Well that makes me depressed haha

How much are we talking when people say overpaid? Are there any other cards like this where the rarity has been percived as much greater than it is so the price inflated to higher prices than today’s?

I remember a while ago I was searching old price check threads on Pokegym, for this exact reason.
I stumbled upon a thread where people were arguing the price of the pop 5 Umbreon and Espeon stars. People were scoffing at sellers who were trying to get $30+ per copy.

Sighhhhhhhhhh

I’ve heard the birthday pikachu promo was worth a bit back in the day

As in the first jp one or the wotc black star one?

particular old school promos this happened a bit, gary will be able to give u some insight, i believe lucky stadiums were more common than originally thought.

In 2000 I sold an ungraded stadium set to Joel in Ohio for 1900.00usd.
B’day pikas both PSA 9 and sealed with stickers I sold for 400.00ea. PSA 10s went for 1000.00.

So is Base Charizard worth more right now or at the height of Pokemania back in '99?

id say now, at least in australia.
Back then the usual price for nm/m was $30 (some stores were trying to get 70-100).
Now they’re regularly finishing at 50-70 at auction

I remember at the markets in 1999 my brother bought his charizard for $25 from the card dealer

In 1999 the online auction sites would bring 40-50.00usd if in mm or better condition.
Below are actual items I sold back then on Yahoo Auctions.

Ahh, Mr. Gilroy, you forget to adjust for inflation

$42.00 → 59.70
$57.75 → 82.10
$45.00 → 63.90

These prices are only 97% as crazy as I once thought. Haha
