BGS compared to PSA

Honestly they don’t need a 10 point scale or in the case of CGC and BGS a 20 point scale.

Anything that has as much whitening as that Charizard BGS 7 should not be graded or rather, should just be graded as Authentic.

At a certain point, they don’t deserve to be in a slab when they could just be put in a sleeve and binder. I’d say anything 7 and below is pointless.

Probably best just to bin them

Oh wow. The most iconic Pokemon card ever is the best you can come up with?

Doesn’t negate anything I said.

More exceptions. Although they’re cards that mere mortals can’t touch:

The price difference between bgs to PSA for the same grade is wild

From what I’ve witnessed at various auctions it goes about like this in terms of grade/value:

BGS 5-7.5 = PSA 3-6
BGS 8 = PSA 6-7
BGS 8.5 = PSA 7-8
BGS 9 = PSA 8

Sometimes the sub-grades can impact things a bit because of how everything is calculated on the BGS scale. But either way, this is about the approximate range I’ve noticed on BGS vs PSA.

Very interesting

What about the upper end, i.e., BGS 9.5? Some say that many of these cards are former PSA 9s. However, I do not get why people would not resubmit their strong PSA 9s to PSA to hope for a 10 (but BGS). Also, very very rarely do we BGS 10’s Base Set Holos. Doesn’t that imply that 9.5 (especially with strong subs) is usually as good as it can get for BGS? The latter argument ofc only holds if we assume BGS and PSA receive the same quality of cards (which may not be the case).

Well yeah not 9.5 are created equal. Higher subgrades can and will usually get you more money.

And depending on what’s actually wrong with the card you might have little to no shot at a PSA 10. Specifically, if there is more than one minor issue with a card. Better chance as 10/10/9.5/9.5 than a PSA 10 nowadays.

What are people’s thoughts here on using the service PSA offers of sending in an encased BGS card with a minimum grade? More specifically a 9.5, that I’d send in to be a minimum 10, which based on my basic understanding of the service, would have PSA only crack the card out and encase it in their slab if the card would earn a PSA 10?

I can’t find much on this kind of thing in terms of people’s experiences outside of a few posts on various threads and YT, but figure maybe someone here has done this, or hasn’t and would strongly advise against it for specific reasons they could share?

Imo, crossing without cracking is a waste of money (if your requested minimum grade is higher than the current one). Crack and cross, or leave it. Just my two cents.

I just cracked 6 psa 8 cards and 1 psa 7 card. Nearly all the cards had the same issue with some minor scratches, but fairly good edges, corners and centering. Out of 7 cards, 5 came back BGS 9 and 2 came back BGS 8.5. However, the surface scored 8.5 for all the cards except one that scored a 9. The cards do look great, but it shows thew difference between how PSA grades vs BGS.

I don’t think PSA is allowing minimum grades at the moment.

See that’s crazy to me. How PSA can just jump a whole grade higher at bgs, I mean that zard I posted is a very clear example of how messed up a card can be and still get a 7. While at PSA it wouldn’t get over a 5 or 6 at best

Like this lotus graded an 8.5. It had a ton of whitening on the borders. That’s not above a PSA 6 if you were to cross grade

Hmm, weird although BGS is the standard for grading MTG vs PSA.

That’s true. Same with sports cards I believe

Most Alpha card corners have sort of a rough cut to them from the factory that looks like “whitening” so I’m not really sure how they assess that compared to other cards. Kind of like how Jungle holos have the silvering and rough edges and can still get PSA 9 or 10 if everything else meets the grading criteria.

To me the edges look worse than 8.5 for sure though, especially around the bottom right side.

Psa tends to bundle the top grades very close together on condition whereas bgs doesn’t.
