Eh, it was the set that reeled me back in after being away for 10+ years.
It was nice having a small set that was complete-able and I also enjoyed the classic collection reprints. Plus all of the related promos that were released alongside the packs were really appealing to me. In my opinion they really nailed down the “celebration” theme well with printing stuff like Light Toxtricity, Zacian LV.X, etc.
I wasn’t around for the 20th anniversary stuff with Generations and Evolutions but they are very Kanto-centrific (well, Evolutions IS Kanto-centric). There’s nothing wrong with that but if that is what we’re getting again for the 30th anniv next year then I’ll feel fine passing on a lot of stuff.

I’ll always recommend expedition but I know how daunting that is nowadays.
Other than that I’d recommend the special sets that others are recommending: Shining Legends, Crown Zenith, Celebrations.
Special note goes out to the HGSS era of cards, they look so cool.

The set that feels the best to me to open is crown zenith with fantastic pull rates and my favourite sets to collect are Team rocket and also all e-reader and 99% of promos.
It’s all subjective though, there’s no wrong answers.
In terms of singles, I’m a huge fan of obsidian flames and paradox rift. Relatively cheap to complete and good artworks in my option.
In terms of long term projects, species collections is such a fun rabbit hole to go down…highly recommend

EX Team Rocket Returns. You could ignore the gold stars and ex cards and still have an incredible set to collect with the reverse foils and Dark Pokemon.

These are my favorite ever ever ever and I hope we get another one like it. I’ve been very slowly collecting over the years too. I have most of the main staples, but still some to go!

If you don’t know what you like it is fun to go through card set lists and look at sets as a whole, could make it easier to decide

Same here!! I’ve restricted myself to buying/trading in person for these as a fun little side quest at shows, since everything else I’m looking for is fairly niche here (non-English, non-Japanese). I love how they all look together in a binder page!

One of my favorite sets to collect is Shining Legends. Super underrated and it has some amazing art by TOKIYA and kawayoo in it. Also has a small and concise amount of cards and (excluding the Mewtwo alt art) is quite affordable to collect singles of as well
