Assistance with pricing Tamamushi University Magikarp

Hi lovely forum members.

I am toying with the idea of adding a tamamushi magikarp to my collection.

Before i put some feelers out there id like to get an understanding of what i can afford. id like to hear what people’s thoughts are on the value of a tamamushi magikarp in PSA 5, PSA 6 and PSA 7.

if you happen to have one in the mentioned grades, reach out

Here are the most recent sales.

Edit: There was also a PSA 9 that sold on eBay for ~$15,000 a few months ago. It was bought by an e4 member.

Because so few exist, they will sell for what the owners dictate unless you are lucky enough to catch one in an auction. The cheapest BINs are $8,000+ on eBay right now. If you plan to wait for an auction, make sure that you have $4,000-$10,000 ready.

Thanks so much.

If anyone has a 5, 6, 7 or 8 and they’re thinking of selling, reach out.

Have been tracking these myself. Agreed with @Dyl I would have anywhere from $5-$15k ready to move. The 8’s have had a wide range of there they land, some traded for $20k back in 2021, but then another sold in April 2023 for $6k. There is a strong amount of inventory online right now IMO and very good time to buy.

@Dyl what system are you using to pull up listings on multiple platforms?

Those prices hurt. I paid $3.3K for a PSA 6 in March 2019. I buy what I like, and I don’t regret it, but to see a card that rare barely double after these crazy 5 years is a bit perplexing.

I could’ve bought 75 Scream Pikachus. Sell 3 of them today and buy a PSA 5 Unikarp and have 72 screams left over.

Not too many people know the history and the work put into obtaining the tamamushi university karp. Make no mistake though I think its history and the way it was obtained makes it one of the coolest cards to own, graded or not. The knowledge and effort kids had to put in to even get to the temporary university was pretty amazing. Let alone win the tournament. And to have such a limited unique artwork from Ken Sugimori is too awesome to pass up.

If they hadn’t reprinted the art it would be a pantheon holy grail imo
