Are we in a bubble?

Aren’t the poncho cards a promotional card? I really like certain promos that have connections to mainline games etc. Even some that are exclusively released in Japan and only in Japanese.

Most come from boxed sets, but a few are promotional

Not in the slightest. I can’t stand them and the Mario and Luigi crossover. Nothing against Kouki Saitou. They have been over posted a billion times and you said it best, lifeless background.

The ponchos are popular items in the market though. They appear in weekly sales and their prices are quite consistent. Demand is there. That being said, I’m not too big of a fan of these cards.

If you have to ask…

Most of the demand for ponchos was driven by China and the Chinese market has significantly cooled off.

That’s interesting, do you have a source that you could share for that?

Mew is…

I sold quite a few cards over the past year.
Here in the Netherlands most people come to your house to buy the cards instead of sending them via mail.

When i put modern cards up for sale, i immediately get a lot of reactions and when they come to get the cards, they are always the <25 year old card flipper types.

When i put some vintage 1st edition base fossil / jungle for sale, i almost get no reactions at all and when they come to get the cards, they are always the older ‘true’ collector type of guys who dont intend to sell them.

I still think modern pokemon is in a big bubble, although not as big as a year ago.

I guess it depends on where you look. Vintage/WOTC and the broader market went into a bubble during Covid. It’s now popped and continues to deflate. Some cards have stabilized, others have continued to drop further.

Pre-2020 Japanese went into a short term bubble last year (2023). Most of those have declined, but a lot of them still haven’t gone back to the prior lows they were at either.

SWSH Alt Arts and sealed went fairly parabolic. A bit of correction has happened lately.

So to answer your overall question, “it depends”.

Price volatility in various areas of the TCG since 2020 has diluted what “bubble” means at this point, which makes it difficult to even see the utility in calling something a bubble. Prior to the Covid boom, I think many people thought of a “bubble” as being a globally significant event (i.e. unusual and temporarily large increase) in a financial market. Since we’ve become hypersensitive to volatile price behaviour in Pokémon it’s become a more common turn of phrase and arguably overused. So we’ve ended up in a situation where it’s like, “ok so it might or might not be a bubble… and?”

No hard evidence, mostly anecdotal.

You can see the spike in price for the ponchos around the same time as the waifu bubble (but ponchos are actually rare and most waifus are set cards so you can see the difference in price correction)

Of course a lot of Americans and Japanese were also involved but I think a lot of people would agree it was China that really drove the market in this period

I am trying my hardest to understand this image but I can not.
My cranial capacity is not at this level.

Not sure tbh. From my pov since the covid boom prices have gone up and seemed to stay generally higher. Some things have come down/ stabilized but I’ve never been able to “forecast the market”. If prices are coming down then its the market correcting itself

Poncho prices have been disconnected from the market as a whole for quite sometime. In fact they’re trajectory has been inverse to the behavior of the overall market itself. I posted about this back in April which ironically where your pricing data starts. https://www.elitefourum.com/t/fa-poncho-pika-2-year-price-discussion/47836?u=mr.garrison

I’m not surprised that Ponchos are well liked, they are easy to understand, involve the most popular pokemon, and have a successful theme. Plus they are Japanese exclusive and have some rarity as well.

I share the opinion and on top of that I can’t even read the freaking poncho’s.

Same for the large amount of Japanese I see going around. Haven’t seen that many since 2004-2005 (when we were allowed to use them in play)

Agreed. I can’t imagine buying cards like these

Correct thread is probably unpopular opinions though I guess
