Any Modern Hockey Card Collectors here?

So i ventured into hockey cards and I dont really know what I am doing. My inderstanding is that the card to get is the rookie cards.

But there seems to be so many different rookie cards. Some have patches in the card, others got autographs, etc. And the prices are all over the place. It feels like i am looking at a bunch of different versions of 1st editions by different companies or sets.

I don’t collect and don’t understand it all either, but I’m a big caps fan and have a 2005 Young Guns Alex Ovechkin in a 9.

In general the most valuable cards are player’s rookie cards. There’s a lot of them for sure but the big ones you want to get are the young guns (Upper Deck Series 1/2 are where you find them), future watch autos (SP Authentic for this), and the cup rookie autos/rpas (The Cup is THE premium hobby box and where you find these cards). Upper deck has the license now so pretty much anything you buy is going to be from then.

Ok thanks that is very helpful. I got these things called ahowcase and ultimate collection. Anyways so the cup is best out there. That gives me a framework to work eit. Thanks

The Cup is definitely the most expensive but best is subjective of course. I’d recommend using cardboard connection to get a better idea of all the sets and what they contain. It’ll help with figuring out what you do and don’t like. But yeah, in general UD Series 1/2 and SPA Future watch rookie cards hold their value extremely well along with The Cup rpas.

Hey my friend,

Hockey is my specialty:) Let me know if you have any questions

I’ve just started collecting hockey this summer, with some inspiration and guidance from Jeremy Lee of Spors Cards Live. I recommend checking out some of his YouTube episodes or livestreams as he is a lifelong hockey collector and investor.

I agree with the other posters on key sets for rookie cards, but there are also some low number inserts which are fun to collect. Jambalaya, PMG, SubZero Gold to name a few. I’ve decided to PC Nathan Mackinnon and have a Cup rookie /99, a Jambalaya rc and some Subzero inserts so far. I also picked up a Makar Exquisite RPA /99 that I like even more than The Cup RPA (aesthetically). Prices aren’t too wild yet… unless you’re chasing Gretzky, McDavid or Crosby rookies. Have fun!

Reading this thread made me get my first card. My girlfriend is a hockey fan since we are recent graduates of Miami U where hockey is probably their best sport. Picked up a super cheap Ice Premier of Blake Coleman(played while we attended Miami) since that seems to be his rookie card.

Yeah a lot of people were ticked off that he didn’t get a Young Guns in that year’s upper deck series 1.
