And people still say WOTC has the best artwork

Im hoping and predicting a sneasler with Ingo, if pokemon have even a clue on how popular that character is its stupid not to put him on a card in some form

There is an Ingo & Emmet FA from the SM era.

With the influx of new artists, I guess the dream of an artist being able to illustrate the whole Pokedex is dead.
Not that that was ever realistic but at least before an artist would get a Pokemon line or a linked concept.

I suppose there is a little of that with examples like AKIRA EGAWA’s Electivire and Magmortar or Shin Nagasawa’s Hisuian trio, but otherwise it’s just hoping that the TPCi people in charge of commissioning send them out to the artist you’d like to illustrate.

WOTC does have Masago Umbreon and Ancient Mew so whatever after doesn’t matter, even after 26 years, no layout formatting comes close.

Pretty much, most normies have bland taste to all dimensions so what were you expecting. Water is wet point but low-key here.

Some killer arts and plenty of appreciation for them on here which counts.

Still prefer WOTC era.

Great design perfectly captures what it’s trying to convey, leaving not one brush stroke too few or many.

If simplicity, or complexity, is key to what is trying to be communicated, then an excellent design will reflect that.

Both older and more modern card designs do this with varying degrees of success. It has nothing to do with how simple or complex the art is, but if the intended meaning comes through in the execution of the idea.

Sugimori art was an introduction to the world of Pokemon. That context required the execution of each Pokemon to be simple, clear, and iconic. There’s also a reason Pokedex entry art is, to this day, rendered in the same style.

Pokemon has always killed it when it comes to talented artists. They are the main reason I collect, and a big part of why anyone collects; regardless of whether or not the beard on their neck is long enough to look at the bottom of every card and follow these people’s careers throughout the history of the hobby. If you do though, you’ll start recognizing their style and guessing before you see the name, and realizing which artists are similar in style when you get it wrong. Looking at this set today I see all of the old familiar underappreciated names that have been at it for so long just grinding out amazing artworks that make bulk worth looking at. But then I see these up and coming new names putting out such amazing stuff right out the gate and I’m just blown away, this hobby is the best because of the artists who make it so, and has such a bright future.

Eventhough I am nostalgic for WOTC (and dont collect modern), I dont think it has the best artwork. The majority of it is pretty straight forward and boring. There are some very pretty cards, but the same goes for any era. I am not into modern stuff but I can appreciate the art and the story that it tells.

I think it also depends hoe long someone is involved in the hobby. Isnt the same for everyone obviously, but what I noticed myself and watching others is that the ‘taste’ in Pokémon cards shift over time.

Also think many of the new sets feature tons of banger arts in the common/uncommon/holo rare slots. Even tho I love alt arts it’s quite a shame that we get so many different rarities because the regular holos usually looks really really good but ofc gets overlooked because of the low value/low rarity.

the machamp is whatever, but the sneasler is lowkey a h-sneasel special art and it is beautiful.

if anything, the machamp shows that this vmax is leftover from last year considering the Stow-On-Side setting of the artwork which is where you fight gmax machamp in the game iirc
