I think there are thirteen cards in the 2009 Pichu/Arceus Illustrator set. A few years ago, I purchased one of them on ebay. I have uploaded an image of it below.
My card features Pikachu, Manaphy, and Arceus. The ebay seller said it was mint and sold it to me for $250 US. I know there is a slight difference between mint and gem mint. When I got the card, I scrutinized it and found a pin-sized hole in it. Other than that, the card has no physical flaws.
(1) I think I bought the card in 2012. Do you think I got a good or bad deal on it?
(2) Since the card had a pin-sized hole, do you think the seller should have lowered the price?
The image is not my actual card. I got it from Bulbapedia. Sorry, I chose the wrong word when describing the pin-sized flaw. It’s actually an indent, not really a hole.
It’s fair to say you probably overpaid considering the indent on the card. You should have returned it or ask for a partial refund the instant you noticed that flaw.
I’m not finding any sales data for this particular card which is the 3rd grade winner, but similar ones have sold for about $400 in PSA 10.
An indent could bring the grade down to a 6… On the other hand, these cards are super rare so it’s possible you might get close to what you paid if you were ever to sell it. There’s actually one listed on ebay for $20,000. lol It will be interesting to see how much that seller ends up earning.
A pin sized hole is a pretty huge flaw in a card. A hole of any kind. If its what I am imagining, then you can’t even consider the card close to mint. Unfortunately there are plenty of cards out there that “other than one irredeemable flaw” it would be mint - the reality however is, one can’t just ignore something like that. Something like that immediately makes the card damaged. It is very likely you overpaid from your description and somebody probably took advantage of you in 2012
I have to echo everyone here, you really need to show pictures of the card.
If its an indent - well indents can also be pretty bad and knock off the value/condition of a card severely
i don’t think you overpaid, bro. The card is incredibly rare and undervalued in my opinion. Yeah, it’s not mint, but it’s still a cool card. Not sure if the guy said it was mint, but regardless, it’s nothing to beat yourself up over.
Scammers aren’t scamming you, personally. Scammers are trying to cheat anyone. If you are repeatedly getting scammed, then reconsider your approach and the ways you are allowing yourself to be scammed.
It’s great you found E4 as a resource to ask questions, but you might consider spending more time researching how to be a savvy buyer and read up on the cards you are interested in before entertaining a purchase. There are lots of posts here about scammers, their tactics, and even names of worst offenders that can help educate you. If you don’t add a little more informed skepticism to your approach you will frustrate yourself and anyone else who tries to help you.
