This is not a new marketing ploy. It’s been done many times with all sorts of collectibles and I’ve never seen it turn into something with a profitable outcome.

Now if you don’t care about the value side of it and only personally want it then it’s great.
If members here want one we should organize a group and get Glenn to take orders?

As much as I love the idea, the lack of limits is a definite deal breaker for me. I’ve seen this type of card flop several times on the secondary market. Bad investment.

So I guess it’ll just be our resident Pikachu collectors going after this, huh?

Yeah. I regretfully agree…

Nope, sitting this one out. I’ve thought about it and while I like the idea of having one I won’t even let myself consider it right now.

I’ve also considered and doubting about it for quite a while, but 2k for a single card, even a solid gold Base Set one, is just too much for me in the upcoming years and maybe ever. Don’t get me wrong, I have the money (30k+ on my savings bank account) and I earn enough (~1.8k each month), but personally I just can’t justify spending 1k+ on a single card, unless I know for sure it’s worth 5k+ (like the SNAP Pikachu), only for re-sell purposes to finance the rest.

Also, completely off-topic, but: Today I read a story in the newspaper about a bus driver who drove on for more than three years with a broken arm, simply because he couldn’t afford the medical treatment over food for his family. Stories like that make me sometimes very sad, and also makes me realize how lucky we all are that we live in rich countries. I know we have different lives and different priorities than the people in those poor countries, but here we are spending k’s on our hobbies, while people on the other side of the world are fighting for survival… Third world problems I guess…

Back to topic:
I’d love to get this card, especially since I’m a sucker for Base Set variants, but they went a bit too high with a retail value of 2,05k (including Japanese tax; excluding shipping / middle-man service / import). For 1k I probably would have bought it, but 2k, no.
I still accept donations though.

Also, how many of you are getting this card? I heard a lot of people saying they won’t, even the two top-Pikachu collectors @justinator and yours truly, but I haven’t heard a lot about those who are going to buy it. If anyone does, please make sure to post detailed pictures here. But don’t make me jealous too much. :stuck_out_tongue:

Greetz,
Quuador

I love the hobby, POKÉMON, and cheap gold but paying over $2,000 for a single card is unjustifiable. For any card regardless of its rarity. TPCi is just taking advantage of the overhype this year. It is a beautiful card, but they can keep 'em for that price. Plus you can’t even enjoy the beautiful colors that Pikachu illustration consists of! :face_with_tongue: This situation reminds me of Martin Shkreli with Daraprim prices, terrible.

@missingno surely you mean its too high a retail price regardless of rarity? For the secondhand market it’s different, prices like that surely just demonstrate the fact the hobby is in a good state being as cards are able to fetch such amounts.

That was for any card in particular.

@woolsluk - Don’t pay attention to M, he likes to remind us every now and then about how contrarian and different he is to everyone else.

Because you are going to buy this, correct?

I am not.

But he would pay 2K gladly under the right circumstances. Which is what he is pushing back against.

But let’s not be petty. We have better things to do with our time.

That’s the thing, there are different types of collectors with different budgets and I don’t see the need to say I wouldn’t pay x because there is always somebody who would. I personally have no cards even near that value but to get a card in the mail that I’ve paid a lot for brings me joy, whilst I wouldn’t pay 2k for a card because I can’t afford it, I gladly would if I could!

This escalated quickly. I’m just saying I wouldn’t buy this, TO ME it’s not worth MY $2k.
