Does anyone know how many prints of shadowless base set there was? I found it curious that shadowless psa cards have a lower pop then 1st edition. My first thought is well this is because everyone has been after 1st edition and sending for grading. If shadowless got popular and demand increased it seems logical to assume we would see a surge in shadowless high psa population? I would then naturally assume that ultimately shadowless has much greater potential to surpass 1st edition in high psa population?
It is believed that 1st ed and shadowless are the same print run however there were extra sheets of cards printed than was needed for print the first edition stamp and the left over sheets were not stamped with the 1st ed stamp but packaged up as unlimited cards. Many people thought the shadowless cards not stamped 1st ed were counterfeit so many of them were destroyed. The common belief is there is much less shadowless cards without the 1st ed stamp. There is quite a bit of info on the boards here you just need to search for it…
It’s believed they were printed in about equal numbers, no one knows exactly for sure. That being said, many got destroyed and played with as most kids or collectors didn’t really care much for them. I know that as a 13 year old back in 1999, I probbaly prefered the cards with a Shadow than a Shadowless. 1st edition cards however got preserved better or kept sealed in their booster boxes for several years.
As far as Shadowless pop catching up with 1st edition? That’s just not happening… look at the pop numbers on PSA’s website. There’s probably quite a few mislabelled copies as they only recognized Shadowless several years later and some mint copies or loose packs/boxes out there, but I don’t expect much of a drastic change in the population over the next few years that would make them overtake 1st edition.
You have to realise most cards have already been graded now, you will see the pop on high grade(9-10) copies of 1st Ed or Shadowless go up maybe 1-2 per month until the supply completely dries up.
Gotcha, I was basing speculation of shadowless catching up to 1st edition on a false assumption that there was a lot more shadowless printed. That makes sense why shadowless will have a lower population. I guess the better speculative question would have been if some shadowless cards will ever be worth more than 1st edition. Thanks very much for the info!
