The fact that the “seller” put up a picture and added a bio “trying to help my parents clean out their house” seems like someone trying to pretend to a be real seller
It says this card was sold for 20.5k (+ tax). i could imagine the sale as being legit. i have no problem with a 0 feedback seller. although the seller’s ebay page has a girl posing with a guy. hmm…
"POKEMON PSA 9 MINT 1ST EDITION CHARIZARD BASE SET 1999 HOLO CARD #4. Condition is New (Just Graded).
First time graded with PSA on July 17th, 2020. When the PSA curator held up the card, he exclaimed “interesting” and he was right, a true MINT 9 (*maybe even more*)!
Putting nostalgia aside, I want to make sure this card finds its rightful home so please reach out with any questions and interest! "
Do PSA curators actually express commentary on cards they receive?
Sad part- I think the manipulation story here is not going to be the last one we hear. I am new to pokemon- but not to cards… and the sports card market has a ton of manipulating- fake sales for comps… etc. it’s rough out there!
I’ll play both sides here and say no one has to buy from the guy, and no one has to sell to him. If you sell a card, understand that it will potentially and possibly eventually sell for more. Do I agree it’s right to sell for double the very next day? If there’s a buyer for it, I guess it’s ok. I personally wouldn’t buy a card listed at 2x the last sold price from days before…but there are plenty of resources for these new Gary Vee hypnotised buyers to do their due diligence. I’m honestly enjoying the IG drama. Needed a laugh today. I’m still buying cards I like and want for my collection every week, and if I feel something is grossly overpriced, I’ll wait to buy it. If I see that it’s increasing steadily, then the best time to buy is now.
I realize I’m taking a risk posting this. However, I feel it’s the right thing to do. I know this guy. He lives local to me and we’ve done many trades and sales with each other.
He’s actually one of the only people I’ve dealt with who actually sticks to their word and doesn’t back out of deals, even if the price goes up significantly between the time we agree and the time we meet.
I know people generally aren’t fans of some of the ways he transacts, but I can say with confidence that the transaction being called “fake” — was not.
To touch on a few additional Minor points I saw throughout this discussion:
Personally, I always ask if overnight shipping is possible on large purchases (mainly because I trust those service levels more, and of course: instant gratification!) and I always offer to cover the cost. I can’t imagine he expects the overnight shipping to be free, as we’ve always split PayPal fees when applicable, etc.
Also, the concept of people asking insanely high prices for certain cards to draw attention to their eBay accounts — or the hobby in general — is nothing new or frowned upon. The only person who loses in those cases, is the seller anyway, because they don’t end up making a sale.
Mentioning other cards in the description, in order to show up in searches is also not new, and not ‘black hat’ in my opinion.
Ultimately, if someone does purchase a card for a record high price, I can assure you this seller did not hold a gun to their head and force them.
In a way—for those of you who believe one person can manipulate a market the size of Pokémon’s— this person is increasing the value of the cards in the hobby. Even if only temporarily. Some might see this as a good thing. Others won’t. Mostly comes down to those who already own it VS those who don’t.
You can never please everybody.
Anyway, as I mentioned, I understand people will write me off as a shill, but I felt compelled to mention that I’ve had nothing but a positive experience with this seller. And I’m happy to prove it in any way if possible, but as far as I see it, there are so many flavors out there to choose from… and salty isn’t always the most attractive.
I just wanted to leave my two cents. I’ve had 1 interaction with CollectiblesGuru. I had messaged him an offer for 3k for a 1st edition Blastoise PSA 9. He responds to me with a counter of 5k and says that by the end of the year the price will be 10k. He also said that if the upcoming auction at the time went below that he would just buy it out. It’s funny how I knew exactly who you guys were talking about before you even said the name. He definitely tries to manipulate the market so that his cards go up in value, but there’s no rule that says he can’t I guess.
Damn I bet if I had more Rolexes than days of the week and could complete the greatest set in this hobby in within a month I’d have this many haters too
This applies even more to us with only one copy. I honestly cannot part with my 1st Edition Charizard. Let’s just pretend we let go now and the price keeps skyrocketing(which it will) we might live our whole lives in regret. In my opinion this is a vital reason as to why this card is and will always be valuable.
