Your "silly/derpy" moment(s) in collecting!

In the moment it sucked but in retrospect, it’s exactly as funny as you are imagining it. I was pretty confident the buyer wouldn’t believe the story but in the end it all worked out.

Unsure if this counts but Its been over twenty years of looking at pokemon cards and i only just now realised while looking at my binder that wotc sets are set out alphabetically…

Thinking that owning slabs would be cool. Ugh they are so clunky and ugly and don’t have an appeal at all that raw cards do.

Just got a notification that my charizard v max was done grading at mnt I really hope it will come back a 10 or 9.5 or I will have lost money

Is using MNT the derpy moment?

I think by using MNT you might’ve already lost money :broken_heart:.

I used to be a non-slab collector. Staunch, no slabs! I bought a Karen’s umbreon 8 and cracked that sucker… now that $40 could be $400… derp (but I could re-grade).
BUT I thought it’d be fun to share the moment when I realized the value of PSA grading: A few years ago, I threw $50 at a GEM 10 squirtle arcanine. I won… And then I realized, it was a glorious card and couldn’t crack it. That Damn Arcanine was the start of my appreciation for slabs, and the value they add to a card. No more “raw-only” for the collection, though I DO prefer it.

Before I collected all variants of the Eeveelutions, I built WOTC holo sets from base, jungle, fossil, rocket, and neo sets in PSA graded 6 through 9, in early/middle 2019. To fund my all variants of Eeveelutions collection, I ended up selling them individually for a couple bucks profit each from October 2019 through March 2020… if I just waited a little bit longer, I would have funded some of the trophy cards I need.

As someone who made the mistake of buying MNT slabs in the past I appreciate this burn 100% :fire:

From the perspective of a Canadian, especially if you’re new to grading, MNT is one of the few realistic options before you gather the courage to ship your cards internationally

I feel ya there! Even Scott said, if only I’d sold more of my WotC during the boom…

If I would’ve gotten serious about collecting when I first got back into cards in 2016… my life would be very different right now lmao. Don’t worry, if you ever think you’ve goofed/ missed an opportunity/ had poor timing, there’s definitely someone else whose in the process of goofing harder rn. gotta start carpin’ all these diems. Seize those karps!!!

Yup! I bought my Eevee Fan Club, Espeon Gold Star, and Umbreon Gold Star after the pandemic started. If I bought these 3 just before, it would probably have been atleast 2k difference.

I had a really beat up Gold Star Charizard. It was from my childhood collection, but I didn’t pull it, it was given to me by a family friend because he was “too old to be collecting Pokemon cards” and gave me his entire collection. As a kid I wasn’t really that picky about condition, but this was super beat up, even by my standards. In High School I went to play at a regionals and was offered a really good trade value wise for it, including Jolteon Gold Star, Shining Celebi, and a bunch of other things that really put the trade in my favor. This was 2013, so while still expensive, Gold Star Charizards were available pretty easily and for not an insane price. I gladly made the trade and figured the next time I saw one in better condition, I’d replace it. I really never buy raw singles online unless they have super high quality scans, so I just thought I’d find a decent one in a store as I was playing competitively at the time and traveling a lot. Never ended up finding one, and now they’re insanely tough to track down, and I’m very worried about fakes. Still determined to add one back to my collection, and eventually get a nice graded copy when I feel like splurging on a grail. Would love to somehow find the damaged one I traded, I remember the damage very specifically and would recognize it immediately, so I’m always looking on eBay for damaged ones as well.

Best part was one of the throw in cards in the trade was a Lucario Lv. X I got for my girlfriend, and we broke up a week later before I had a chance to give it to her.
