In high school my cousin and I decided to trade our Pokémon binders (basically everything) for a bunch of random yugioh cards. We had decided to switch games and wanted bulk for a quick start :man_facepalming:

First time buying pokemon product for myself was in 2013 when I bought two plasma blast theme decks thinking I could get ultra rares from them.

I started collecting Japanese unlimited, then decided to sell off all my unlimited cards since I already had the 1st edition. Then about a year later after completing the English master set, I decided to go after Japanese unlimited once again. It took more time and money to get some of the cards back that I already sold off. Wish I just hit the pause button instead of selling them all.

One time this happened and I was 100% serious. I ended up selling them a Skyridge Flareon at the same price so I took a bit of a hit at the time

How in the world did this happen? Did you contact PSA? What was their response?

It was very strange. The slab just
opened up while I was attempting to put it into a bubblewrap bag. I felt bad for the buyer but in the end I think he came out ahead.

I did not contact PSA because I’d probably still be waiting for it to be resolved today. I sent the card to CGC (I think it got a 9) and just sold it for less. So if someone out there has a CGC 9 Skyridge Alakazam, it could be this one :stuck_out_tongue:

I remember buying an Illustrator from someone who “imported goods from japan and it just happened to be in one of their purchases”. Tbf I was told this after the auction ended, and ultimately got my money back. But after reading that message, I knew I f’d up.

Though no one ever hears about this stuff, this kind of service you offer does go a long way with a quality business built out.

Some of these stories hit hard

So, I’m a naturally impulsive person (not to be confused with repulsive) and I cracked several neo packs about 4 years ago because I wanted those vintage holos
I got none. Not too derpy tho, so here’s a good one. I woke up one morning during covid and said, “I really have always wanted a 1st Ed Rocket Squirtle!” Love that guy! SO
I went and bought one in PSA 9
for $125. :skull_and_crossbones: :weary: (Heck, I might as well have sleep-walk-purchased it!

Now

  1. I no longer buy in the morning, only later in the day when my brain has actually had a chance to wake up.
  2. I collect cleanly opened pack wrappers and put pack-appropriate cards in them, so I know they’re duds, but can’t remember what.
  3. I also keep a stock of not-too-valuable but still fun booster packs to crack so that I can be disappointed, and remember WHY my dumb ass don’t crack old packs anymore!

I had a sealed mewtwo gx detective pikachu box and opened it about a year ago because it wasn’t going up now it’s worth almost 300 dollars when I got about 25 dollars in pulls :frowning:

If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think a Mewtwo GX Detective Pikachu box is worth $300 bucks. They’re going for like $50 bucks on eBay.

This is a close call. My cat knocked over a vase of flowers filled with water on my lower counter. I had several envelopes with cards ready to mail out on the high top counter, and the lower counter was covered with water.

Pro tip - keep your envelopes and bubble mailers secured until you are ready to go to the post box

I didn’t realise until several weeks after the fact that I threw out ~45 Generations Packs in a box that I thought I had checked, but actually hadn’t.

I think they were ‘only’ 10 bucks each at the time, but oof

When I got back into the hobby last year it took me a while to realize what kind of collector I wanted to be.

At first I just wanted any WOTC card from Base through Neo Genesis (since that’s what I collected up to as a kid). Condition didn’t matter to me.

Bought a few loose cards for cheap and a complete Jungle set with cards in varying condition. Turns out I did care about quality and could not stand cards that were bent, chipped, scratched or dented.

Then started looking at graded cards. Didn’t understand the fuss about PSA and thought I was being clever by buying cheaper, lower grade slabs from Canadian graders (since there weren’t many PSA slabs on the market here).

Turns out Canadian graders have no idea what they’re doing and nobody wants their slabs (not even my own countrymen). Also realized I’m more particular about condition than I thought, and 9 is the bare minimum grade I’m comfortable with.

Yikes, now I’m stuck with all these bad condition cards and sketchy slabs nobody wants. Uh
better try and sell some of these.

Fast-forward a year later and I’ve finally sold all of these cards and slabs I didn’t want. Took ages since the pool of prospective buyers was incredibly small (mostly casual collectors that didn’t care about PSA or card condition) but I was able to break even or gain a small profit in some cases.

As stressful as this was, it was honestly a really good learning experience. My mistakes helped me understand what I wanted out of the hobby and even taught me how to navigate online marketplaces.

With that said, I never want to see another MNT or KSA slab in my life again

To my shock while I was packaging the card, the PSA case literally fell apart in my hands as I was putting it into a sleeve.

this actually made me laugh out loud. envisioning a slab falling apart as ur packaging it and sitting there like “wtf just happened” is killing me
