- Holon Phantoms
- Legend Maker
- Rising Rivals
- Team Rocket Returns
- Unseen Forces
I love WOTC stuff, but being 21 most of my fond childhood memories come from the tail end of it or the first ex era. Here are my top 5.
- Ex Team Rocket Returns
- Ex Team Magma vs. Aqua
- Ex Power keepers
- Expedition
- Ex Crystal guardians
Oof, this was rough:
- Team Rocket
- Neo Genesis
- Neo Discovery
- Gym Challenge
- Base
Legendary Collection. Neo Discovery. Ex Sandstorm. EX Battle Boost. Dinosaurs Attack!
- Neo Revelation
- EX Dragon
- Neo Genesis
- EX Team Rocket Returns
- Skyridge
Great thread! In no particular order…
1st Ed Base
Neo Discovery
cp6 Japanese evolutions
Aquapolis
Jungle
And some very very honorable mentions, team rocket, shining legends, Japanese heart gold soul silver, skyridge, expedition, Pokekyun, every neo set, japanese vs series, S&M japanese promos, Vending series, Southern island, fossil.
I could just about take any of those sets and swap them with any of my top 5 and it wouldn’t feel wrong. Also all Ex series sets are low top tier for me.
- Call of Legends
- EX Crystal Guardians
- HGSS
- Shadowless Base
- Southern Islands
- Southern Islands
- Vending series
- Base set
- Gym Challenge
- Aquapolis
- Base set
- Neo gen
- Team rocket
- Fossil
- Legendary collection
This is an hard question to give an answer to! I really had to put some thought into this. Top 5 is easier then the picking of top 1 though!
- Delta Species
- Legend maker
- Crystal guardians
- Deoxys
- Dragon frontiers
Then first off the bench is skyridge.
This a tough one as its really all of WOTC for me but i have to pick 5 so:
- Base Set
- Skyridge
- Fossil
- Team Rocket
- Jungle
And then tied with number 5, we have:
5.1) Neo Revelations
5.2) Neo Destiny
5.3) Neo Discovery
5.4) Neo Genesis
5.5) Expedition
5.6) Aquapolis
5.7) Gym Heros
5.8) Gym Challenge
5.9) Legendary Collection
5.9.1) Base Set 2
Base Set 2 always gets done dirty.
I still love it secretly
- Gym Challenge
- Base
- Neo Genesis
- Neo Destiny
- Fossil

Gym Heroes/Gym Challenge - As a kid I thought these sets were the coolest thing since sliced bread. The Pokemon were actually owned by trainers from the games/TV show, and the Pokemon really popped off the cardboard. These sets don’t get a lot of love today, with many noting the lack of unique artwork, but the Sugimori designs best instill the true essence of Pokemon like no other artistic interpretation can. I also like the massive size of these sets despite having different designs for the holos and regular rares.
Neo Revelation - A trend on my top 5 list is an appreciation for the unqiue split in holo rares and regular rares. I always disliked having to collect both the holo rare and the regular rare in sets like Jungle and Fossil, not so much because it increased the number of cards that I needed to get to complete the set, but mostly because I didn’t want repeats of the same artwork–I wanted more unique cards. Neo Revelation, although a small set, provided a unique card with every one of its set slots. The holo rare Legendary Dog (Cat?? I think they’re actually cats!) Trio really defines this set well. Absolutely gorgeous cards. The set also introduced Shining Pokemon. I’d say that Neo Rev is probably the most forgotten of the WotC era old format cards, but it is still a gem.
Neo Discovery - While this set did have the cursed holo/rare repeats (although it offered a few unique rares), what makes Neo Discovery such a showstopper is the sheer beauty of its cards. The illustrators must have gained some sort of incredible inspiration at this point, because the artwork of Neo Discovery is truly unmatched–the best of any WotC set. Espeon, Umbreon, Kabutops, Scizor, Houndour, Poliwhirl, Weedle–just to name a few–are unforgettable artworks for any Neo collector.
Base Set - What can I really say about Base Set that hasn’t already been said a thousand times in the past? It helped introduce the world to Pokemon. Along with the games and the TV show, the Base Set started off the Pokemon TCG with a bang and made it a vital factor in driving Pokemon’s popularity. Pokemon as a franchise wouldn’t be the same today without Base Set. But what exactly made it so great? The cards are rather plain, but that’s all they needed to be. The art didn’t have to be beautiful. All it needed to be was simple, to give each Pokemon a defined form. Its no-nonsense designs are forever ingrained within the minds of the populace, and that’s because they were so easy to absorb. For its impact on the franchise, Base Set really should be #1 on any list like this buuuuuuut I’m gonna be a stinker and say…
Neo Genesis - In my eyes, the peak of the TCG and the Pokemon franchise as a whole. Pokemon was the greatest concept to ever dazzle my young mind, and Generation 2 was like fireworks going off in every cell in my brain. It was bright, it was colorful, it was cool, and it was amazing. An expansion of a world that I already loved, I never really thought as to WHY I loved it so much until just now, and it didn’t even take that much thinking to decipher it: Generation 2 and Neo Genesis just make me happy. The mesmerizing colors and crispness of the Sugimori starter designs, the sleek new Steel types, the awe-inspiring Lugia, and the sheer presentation of every single card in the set is just so easy on the eyes. I could stare at these cards all day. Whenever I flip through my binders, Neo Genesis always captures my gaze longer than anything else. It’s not the most important set in the franchise, and it’s not the most beautiful, but it is by far the most appealing and fun to collect. And that is why I collected Pokemon 20 years ago and still do to this day: because it’s fun:)
Fkn preach!! Gym challenge set is my fav. Right on! Neo gen is up there for me too because it was the first set.of the second gen and I loved it!
ex Unseen Forces
HS Undaunted
Call of Legends
XY Roaring Skies
ex Team Aqua & Team Magma
These Sets I either loved collecting and opening when they were released, or feature some of my favorite Pokémon and artworks. Also the design of the set symbols played a big part haha
Glad to see that Base Set isn’t the majority’s number 1 choice
Only have one favorite set, The Japanese P promos. It’s the first Japanese Pokemon numbered promo set released in 2001 & 2002. The distribution of cards was from a variety of sources including: Theatrical releases, DVD insert, Pokemon store opening, Coro Coro magazine, Trainer Magazine, Guidebook insert, Pokemon Festa, Battle Road, McDonalds promotions, Triple Get Lottery, and Tournament participation. The cards are mostly affordable with the exception of the 008/P Tropical Wind…
