Foreword
Hi all, it’s been a long time since I last posted in this forum. Life happened in 2019 and my hobby was placed on hold. I sold most of my earlier cards for a minor profit but that was before the major boom from recent years.
I resumed building the collection again in 2023 with selected graded CGC slabs as I prefer their labels. This year, I decided to do a niche collection on my own terms. So this will be the start of documenting my journey in collecting Rainbow Rares.
Why Rainbow rares?
Rainbow rares were initially introduced during the Sun Moon era with their corresponding GX full arts in each set. My initial reaction to them was muted. Echoing some collectors, I felt the Pokemon Company was inflating the number of rarities included in a set with the introduction of this rarity. Over time, my opinion changed as I warmed up to the rainbow (R/B/G) colours.
Xacrifar’s Rainbow rare collecting rules
- The cards collected has to be either Japanese or simplified Chinese.
- In my view, the Japanese print is superior to that of the English print. Cheaper too

- Simplified chinese is the cheaper alternative as I can’t afford the Japanese cards for the top tier rainbow rares like Charizard GX, Umbreon GX and Mewtwo GX from the Sun moon era.
- Majority of the cards will be collected in a binder.
- I doubt many people will grade rainbow rares as it appears to be a niche variant among collectors
State of the collection
I acquired my rainbow rare grail earlier this year. What was it ? Why it’s the Ho-Oh GX from “To Have Seen the Battle Rainbow” set. Ho-Oh is known for leaving rainbows behind as it is flies across the skies. Making this the perfect candidate for this variant. I commissioned an extended art for it, making this the highlight of my Rainbow collection.

Mew VMAX Rainbow Rare in a blue CGC label
People assumed the RBG rarity from the 30th anniversary was unique, I beg to differ as the Mew VMAX had its own RGB with its Rainbow Rare variant.
Moving forward, I will be sharing some of my additions for the binder.
